Poor Sleep the Night Before Surgery Is Linked with Postoperative Pain

Women who sleep poorly the night before they undergo surgery have increased postoperative pain according to researchers from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.

"In the March issue of the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, Dr. Caroline E. Wright and colleagues report on 24 women who agreed to wear a sleep-monitoring device the night before routine breast-conserving surgery. The actigraphy device provided objective validated measures of sleep duration (total sleep time) and disruption (low sleep efficiency). On postoperative day 7, pain severity and interference with activities of daily living were assessed with the Brief Pain Inventory."

Lower sleep efficiency was significantly associated with greater pain severity and interference during the week after surgery.

Those women who slept worst the night prior to surgery had 59% to 64% higher pain scores.

Lower sleep efficiency was not associated with depressed mood, emotional upset, or relaxation as assessed on the morning of surgery.

So thats why I was in so much pain after my resection - the sleepless night before!!!

At my pre-surgery assessment I asked if I could take a sleeping pill the night before and he said it was probably a good idea so that I could get a good night's sleep.

I took Ambien the night before both of my c-sections and slept really well.

How about the fact that I don't even sleep before a procedure, let alone a surgery! I'm always afraid the alarm won't go off or some other problem will come up. I just can't sleep even with a sleeping pill!

I take enough sleep MEDS to knock a horse out according to the nurses but the night before any surgery i can't shut my eyes i think its cause we don't know what to expect after wards how much pain will we have will there be drainage tubes will there be a NG tube a central line there is so much that goes through our heads the dreaded night before. Jenn
