Back in the bad old days of the IRA, things were a bit more fraught, I believe there were more bush lurkers. Even now there is still a Queen's Guard stationed down the road at Ballater, and you can always tell when royalty is around because there are police patrols running along the road along the river (it's a narrow valley so only one main road) and they stop for nothing, not even a traffic accident.
My father was brought up in the area, literally within sight of Balmoral Castle. Got totally fed up of rural life, wanted to see the world; so joined the army, the local regiment being the Gordon Highlanders. Went down South for basic training, did well, really put himself out and impressed the sergeant major. So upon passing out....they made him part of the Queen's Guard. An offer he
couldn't refuse. Guess where they posted him....!
To this day I think he is overcompensating with all his holidays abroad.
I will not tell you of my only meeting with royalty, it is too embarassing.
