I would appreciate some professional crohnie opinions on this: Yesterday I started having abdominal pain- it kind of feels like someone kicked me in the stomach. This is not normal for me. I felt overstuffed after eating, have been having loose, frequent bm's and woke up in the night feeling very dizzy. The room would spin whenever I changed elevations. Actually couldn't stay upright at one point. Felt nauseous when I was experiencing that dizziness. Also lots of bad-smelling gas.
My life has been very stressful for quite some time. I've been blaming that for some slight changes in my cd. I recently started a new job as a cashier and I've taken some immodium to get through some shifts. I took one 2 days in a row and wonder if that has anything to do with my current problems. Normally I just take colazal for my cd which is in my colon only. I've had to take prednisone on occasion but other than that it's been pretty easy to deal with compared with some of the stories you all have shared.
I am wondering if this is a partial obstruction maybe? I'm thankfully off today, and plan on eating only when I need to take my darvocet. Got a bad headache right now. I have moved and don't have an appointment with my new gi until 6/8.
I've been feeling like maybe I need to make some dietary changes to try to get firmer bm's before this happened anyway. I just don't know what to do. What used to work doesn't seem to anymore. I'm hoping this is just a bad couple of days for me, but it's still too soon to tell.
So, does this sound like a partial obstruction? Does anyone else ever experience dizziness with their cd symptoms? Any diet tips? I thought I heard that adding a certain type of fiber could bulk things up but the thought of adding fiber scares me.
Thanks for your help!

It might possibly be a partial obstruction, but to tell you the truth it doesn't sound like it. When I have obstructions (partial or full) I have crampy abdominal pain that comes in waves much like labor pains, can't move air in either direction, no bm's at all, or very small amounts of liquid stool, and then within time I get nauseous.
I am wondering if the Immodium may have upset your system or possibly could be the beginning of a flare. I would try to keep to a pretty liquid or soft diet for a bit and see if that helps any. I can't do the fiber either as it causes problems for me. I have the stricturing type of Crohns. Good luck!

Thanks Nanners. I'm hoping it's not an obstruction. I thought they'd be less likely since my cd was found only in the colon. I just felt so backed up despite the fact that I was going. That was all I could think of. I've never had pain in the stomach area. Maybe I just need to be more careful with my diet. Usually I only get the crampy bm's when I'm crazy enough to drink coffee. I need to get this under control so I will try not to eat much today. I'm hoping I can hold off until my scheduled gi appointment.

Hi, the dizzy spells you are having maybe due to you being dehydrated due to you having frequent loose bm's make sure your drinking plenty and like you say just keep an eye on your diet hope you feel better soon Bev x

My chrohn's is in my colon and rectum as well, however I will have days where I feel like someone has been tap dancing on my stomach and I cannot eat. I get the same nausea and dizzy episodes. I find if I drink some warm fluids and place a warm pack on my stomach it can be soothing. The heat seems to help the gas to pass and whatever is making me feel blocked up pass as well- Hang in there.....

I'm trying ginger tea right now. Had chicken bouillon earlier. Plain water doesn't seem too appealing today. The dizziness actually started before the frequent bm's but I'm trying to make sure I'm drinking fluids today. I only ate a pop tart each time I had to take my darvocet. Not the most nutritious but I thought it'd be easy to digest. Thankfully the bm's have stopped and the gas as well. Just feeling like I got punched in the gut. I'm losing hope that I'll make it in to work tomorrow and since I'm new that really bums me out. I haven't mentioned the cd yet. My last job I worked for 2 years without taking a sick day.
My other thought...I read that pancreatitis can happen with our meds. But wouldn't that pain be really, really bad? I hurt but I'm not doubled over or anything. I'm just trying to think of what is so high in the center of the ab that would make me hurt.
Thanks for your replies!

Hey, I have all your symptoms, pretty much: the nausea, the constant D, the bloating, painful, odiferous gas, and sometimes the dizziness, too. The other day my legs went all rubbery while I was shopping--closest I've ever come to passing out. For the past year, I feel as if I'm getting weaker every day. But nobody can find any reason for it, and it's all been going on for many months now. I used to be anemic, but my hematocrit is better than ever; I've gained 18 pounds (only 8 of which I wanted); I've gone back to getting monthly B-12 shots--but I still feel really really bad. I've been to one doctor to try to find out whether my CD is masking some underlying problem, but nobody seems particularly interested in finding anything. Like you, I don't know whether what I'm looking at is a partial obstruction, CD symptoms, or something unrelated. I can tell you, though, that it's been like this for way too long to be a serious obstruction. I would have been hospitalized and in surgery by now, if this all was the result of an obstruction. Hang in!

Hey I thought of something late last - in 98 I had mutiple surgeries and procedures and almost forgot this one- the symptoms got really bad (abdominal pain just below diaphram) - my doc reccommended an ERCP (Sic ?) it turned out that the sphincter to the
opening of my stomach was not
opening properly- as I recall they widened it and placed a temporary shunt in, which was removed a couple of weeks later, I still get the pain from time to time but it did help.........

I have an appointment in less than an hour. But it's my IM doc and she seemed reluctant to treat my cd last time I saw her. We'll see what happens.
I do have gerd and they did an endoscopy a couple of years ago and my LES doesn't close properly. I've been taking otc meds for my gerd for awhile now. Sometimes I get breakthrough reflux. Hopefully it's not enough to cause serious problems. I will have to remember to mention this. Still doesn't explain my frequent trips to the bathroom. I've actually gone from loose to D today. Fun times. As much as I hate prednisone I'm actually looking forward to it if it'll get me out of this misery. I just don't want to take it if they aren't sure it's needed.
Nawlinscate, I can't believe you don't have answers for these symptoms after so long. I found myself wondering if it could be cd in the stomach. I guess they can check for that with endoscopy. Have they run any tests on you?

I see my gastro doctor again in August. If my symptoms are still this bad, I'll have to have a serious talk with him about
everything. I haven't had an endoscopy or colonoscopy since 2003, so I'm probably due for them (although I can think of nicer ways to spend my time!). I don't think I have CD in the stomach, since it's always been confined to the ileum, but it's very possible I've got a set of stomach and/or esophageal ulcers--or a thyroid problem, maybe. I no longer have a reliable family physician, so I'll tell my gastro guy everything and see what he recommends. Thank you so much for your concern--you have no idea how much it means to me!

You have a long wait for August! I'm not sure I could suffer that long. I hope it gets better before then for you.
Well, the doc thinks it's gastroenteritis and vertigo which is unrelated. Not sure I agree with her. I think they are related somehow but what do I know. She told me to take meclizine for the vertigo which she thinks is an inner ear problem. She told me to eat the typical soft bland diet. I did and am still having D so I'm thinking I might go back to clear liquids and see if it'll go away. I finally am at the point that the stomach feels better after I get the D out of me. It just keeps coming back though.
Great doctor's excuse for work they gave me: She states that she is ill. And, she states that she needs to be off work until this date. It was the doc who told me to take another day off when I asked if I could return to work if I felt better. It's a mute point as I'm in no better condition yet, but it makes it sound like I could be faking just to get a work excuse.
They gave me exercises to try to train my inner ears not to be so sensitive. I'll give them a try but I really think this won't clear up til the gi symptoms do.

Yeah, I'm a little doubtful about
the vertigo diagnosis, too. I know from ten years of experience that having lots and lots of D can make you feel weak and exhausted--and dizzy--and a long flare can sap your energy and make you dizzy, too. Let's hope that things are much better for you after the gastroenteritis clears up. At college (decades ago), we used to refer to gastroenteritis as "green death," and we dreaded its predictable appearance once or twice a year. If it turns out that that's what's causing your symptoms, you can breathe a big sigh of relief!
