In my third month following ileostomy and total proctocolectomy--crohn's finally got the best of me. Routine blood work showed elevated liver functions and I went for a liver biopsy today. GI says this is fairly common in crohn's. I don't hear too much about it. Anyone out there with thoughts? He says the blood work indicates I have one of three conditions. I'm not too happy.

I don't have any kind of liver disease, but I will tell you I had to have a liver resection because of a benign tumor on my liver (not a cyst). Its amazing to me how much this dd effects the rest of your body.

I was thought to have Primary Bilary Cirhrosis.....but they have changed that in the last year to Primary Schlerosing Cholangitis.....both are autoimmune related, as well as Crohns, and have a higher connection to those with the intestinal diseases.
What were the ones they mentioned to you?

Gail - I don't mean to hijack this thread but I would be very interested in hearing more about your liver tumor if you feel comfortable sharing. Doctors found four small tumors in my liver last April after an ultrasound to check my gall bladder. Three are about 1 cm in size and one is about 3 cm. After a few weeks of absolute terror, I was extremely relieved to find out that they appear to be benign (hope to God they're not wrong) but 3 MRI's later and they are still debating whether they are FNH or adenoma. I will have another MRI in a few months with a new contrast drug in the hopes of getting a better diagnosis without having to resort to biopsy. These tumors are quite rare and I seldom run into other women with this problem, so it would be so helpful if we could compare notes.

original--GI suspects the three diseases you mention autoimmune hep, pbc, or psc. OR a combo. it's getting a bit difficult to stay positive but i'm trying. The good news is that the biopsy was really easy and not much pain. He did it without painkillers. I have a great doc. I'm just getting really frustrated right now.

Hi sammies. I had a stent placed in my common bile duct. I had sl elevated liver enzymes, right upper quadrant pain and a dilated duct was found on U/S. It was removed after 3 months and I have been mostly sx free since then. I believe it was not too long after starting remicade (only had 3 doses before an allergy set in), and kind of felt there was some correlation, or PSC but only a guess. It was also reported on CT that my liver was "fatty" but the doc said it was normal for a woman my age. smhair Good luck with the biopsy.

It started out about 6 mos after my first bowel resection. I first had what I thought was a gallbladder attack. I kept having a dull aching pain in my side most of the time. So the doctor ordered a u/s and they found the growth. He was worried at first that it might be cancerous and did a few tests and we found that it wasn't. The reason they ended up doing the surgery was because I was symptomatic (the constant ache in my side). Turned out to be FNH. I will tell you it was a very painful surgery. For pain relief they use Fentanyl patches with Morphine for break thru. Getting off the Fentanyl was horrible and I went thru bad withdrawals. I have now have alot of adhesion pain in my side now too. So if you are not symptomatic, I would avoid the surgery if you can.

DEAR SAMMIES..THE VERY FIRST SYMPTOMS I EVER HAD OF THIS DISEASE LANDED ME IN THE HOSPITAL TO TAKE OUT MY GALLBLADDER (2001 - 6 WEEKS AFTER MY FIRST CHILD), THEN IN 2007 I WAS TOLD AFTER TESTING THAT I HAVE A "FATTY LIVER" . I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THAT MEANS, BUT I AM LEARNING THAT THERE IS A REAL CONNECTION BETWEEN CD AND OTHER "INFLAMMATORY RESPONSES" IN OUR BODY. DON'T YOU THINK IT IS ALL RELATED?

I have a fatty liver too, was diagnosed shortly before my crohns. I had to stop drinking alcohol(which was a nitemare at the time) Little did I know much worse was to come, as I didnt know about the crohns then.

Since then I developed a liver reaction after taking azathiroprine.I was jaundiced, throwing up all the time, no appetite and constant itching. I came off the azathiroprine and was much better after about 5 days.

I also have a lesion on my liver which they monitor by scans, seems it is no problem at the moment because it hasnt grown and doesnt cause me any trouble. I hope it stays that way. Dont know if that is relevant.

I have read that crohns and fatty liver are linked. My understanding is that fatty liver is exactly that - fat in your liver

Hi I have Crohns and I also have a fatty liver. My biggest fear is having Liver disease since my brother, who by the way also had Crohns disease, just recently past away because of Cirrosis of the Liver which I believed was caused by Crohns since he was not a drinker. I hope everythings goes okay with you. Keep me posted on your condition.

Has anyone tried Milk Thistle for healthy liver support? I have been doing a lot of research on this herb and it appears that it would be beneficial for those of us with Crohn's who are also taking prescription medications. You might want to look into it. The research/evidence seems to be building.
