Bad "D" after resection anyone?

It's been four weeks, and the lovely "D" is awful. Funny thing is - I never had "D" with flares. Now, it's like I literally "poop" everything out - very fast after eating, and I'm not flaring!

Is this normal after resections? I had 4 inches of my colon and 8 inches of small bowel removed.

Hi,

Did you by chance have a right hemicolectomy? If you did it would mean the terminal illium was removed, which is like a valve, and now the stool flows through. It should settle down some, but you may find yourself needing imodium now. Did you develope lupus from the Humira?

Yes, the lupus came from the Humira - or so they think. It's tough because we don't really know for sure if the humira caused it or if I had it all this time but the disease was inactive due to the prednisone/imuran I've taken over the years. I wasn't on those when I started the Humira.

Very confusing. Always something.

I know after I had my resection in '07, I was going A LOT. I was going more than I had in a very long time. It took me a few months to get it under control, but it finally settled down. I think it had something to do with the removal of the ileocecal valve.

After my resection all was good for about a month and then I started having "D" everyday. Just last week that all turned around, now i have been constipated. Is my body adjusting to the resectiion? Or is it because I have adjusted my diet. I quit coffee and I now have fruit smoothies that I make in the morning and i also add flaxseed powder. It seems to me that once I started adding Flaxseed powder thats when the constipation stared.
Hopefully your body will adjust soon, or maybe you need to make some changes in your diet. I'm not the doctor, it's just my advise.

You are only 4 weeks out from surgery. The explosive D is common until your bowels adjust to the surgical changes. Usually within time, things quiet down. Although sometimes folks do have more d after surgery. Most often than not though once your body adjusts things get better.

Hi i had a right hemi in 93 and was told by my surgeon then that i would always have the D which i did but went on to lomitil 2 tabs in the morning and that would keep all food and drink in for most of the day without going to the loo but around 4 in the afternoon i would need to goand probably 3 times more in the evening sorry its a bit graphic but its the only way to explain it good luck hope you get it sorted soon Bev x smilewinkgrin

I have had 2 resections - the first one was similar to yours and I remember it taking some time for my system to settle down after such a major disruption. One thing that has remained constant is the explosive diarrhea - the doctors explained to me that this is because the bit that had been removed usually recycled bile salts which break down fats; because this bit is missing the recycling is less efficient and so every now and then I continue to have this problem - though I am now doing lower fat diet and not having any problems so far. My most recent resection was in March and I haven't got much small bowel left so am trying fairly low fibre diet as well - balancing act as I now am suffereing more from C than D!!

hope i've helped - it takes months to recover so don't expect too much too soon; if you're anything like me I'm anxious about anything going in my body unless I can be in control of the outcome but it's got to be done

You might want to ask your surgeon or GI about prescribing questran. It comes in powder form. I take half a packet every morning. It made a huge difference in the "D." I started taking it about 3 weeks after my resection. I experimented with the amount, but finally settled on 1/2 a packet. Be patient. Things settle down, but it takes a while. My doctor told me it takes about 6 to 9 months for guts to settle down and figure things out and I thought he was crazy - but it turned out, he was right!

I have not tried or heard of questrian, but I appreciate the suggestion and will ask about it when I go to my follow-up appointment.

Hiya,

I would also advise you to try Questran - if the ileocecal valve was removed in your resection then there is a good chance Questran will work for you. I had the same symptoms until my GI recommended Questran and it changed my life - it tastes YUK and you will need to take it indefinitely but it gave me my life back. There's only one way to find out if it will help you - Try it out. I take one sachet mixed with water every morning and then i can eat what i like for the rest of the day without any pain or D.
