Collagenous Colitis?

Somewhere else there is a thread about C diff. There, I mention a study of studies - examining the use of probiotics in treating C diff. That study said that from the studies they examined, the only probiotic that showed an effect in treating C diff was S boullardi. It is a bit hard to know whether the studies using bacteria were done at the same time as also treating with antibiotics - which would be hard on the poor probiotics. It seemed suspicious that the only probiotic that worked was a yeast that would not be affected by antibiotics. Anyway, the Lactobacillus bacteria are fine, but they are largely killed by stomach acids (unless you have them in an enteric coated capsule) and they don't report anything about those two binding to the gut wall, so their effect is transient. The reason that Culturelle is my favorite is that it is more able to survive stomach acid and does bind to the gut wall - producing a localized protective barrier, but more important, remaining present and active. It has been shown to produce compounds that reduce gut inflammation - the most important benefit from taking probiotics. I know fewer details about Align, but it likely does many of the same things as Culturelle, presumably binding at different sites, so it may be an idea to alternate between those two probiotics on succeeding days. Bifidobacter species have been successful in displacing other gut bacteria from binding sites, so it has possibilities.

I had been doing kinda well, but today had an "accident" and am kinda down in the "dumps." No pun intended.

 

Any info on what to do next?

 

This is not an easy disease to try and handle.
