For those that have kids..did your kids end up with Crohns or Colitis?

Nope, three grown, no signs of any IBD in any of them, and they are well past the traditional age of onset.

So far I have no info.  I go back on Friday for another sono.  I hope to see a little nugget in there!

I was just curious about the genetic link.

Nope for me too. I have 3 grown daughters and 5 grandbabies, and thank God none of them have developed Crohns or any other autoimmune disease. Woo Hoo!

I have Crohns. My maternal grandmother and paternal grandmother have it. My older sister has it and my older brother has it. my twin sister however does not have it(but she has problems). My older brother has a daughter who is six who is currently having major stomach problems and we are PRAYING that it isnt Crohns.

We have a Crohns family tree. I have more extended family with it too.

For me there is a strong genetic link. My Mom had CD, her cousin has it, her cousins son has UC and their uncle most likely had one or the other. I have 2 daughters who both have tummy issues. Both my Mom and I were not officially diagnosed until our first born was 1, even though we both had tummy issues from the time we were young. So I will be watching my daughters like a hawk when that time comes.

I think that some families just have more of a predisposition to IBD than others. It seems that when there is a genetic link, there are a LOT of family members who have it. The way I have dealt with it is just to try to deal with CD is as much of a positive way as I can, so that if my kids do get the diagnosis they won't see it as a horrible thing.

I have a cousin who has Colitis.  That's it though.

I always thought my mom had something since she is always constipated but maybe that's just her being older. 

I am a bit concerned about passing this onto my kid.  Provided there is a kid!

We all pass on things to our kids, good and bad. What we have to hope for is that we give them the tools to deal with everything that comes their way. That is what good parenting is all about. I know I don't wish any pain for my daughters, but I do know that having seen me deal with CD all their lives has made them much more aware of the good times and more compassionate human beings. I know that if they are unlucky and do end up with CD they will be able to handle it just like they have handled all the other things life has thrown at them.

And by the way, Good Luck with the Sonogram, I will be keeping everything crossed.

Thanks Zanne.  I agree with you.  I can only hope for the best and prepare him/her for life's challenges.

 

At least if my kid does end up with this DD he/she will have someone who gets it and can really help them.

I have no previous family members with Crohn's, but my sister has always had mild stomach issues.

Currently, my 5 year old daughter does not show any signs of Crohn's, but that is definitely a fear in the back of my mind. She seems to have gotten my allergies. I do know that if she does get the DD, then her mom and I will be able to give her good coping mechanisms and ways to deal with it.

The risks aren't that much higher when one parent has it. My hubby has suspect CD though, so my daughter's risks are even higher. We aren't concerned for now. Neither of us heard of the disease before I got it, it's strange he might have it now too. But we're both happy and healthy the majority of the time and know that she would be too even if she gets this DD or something else.

I have two grown daughters with no Chron's. So it is very possible to have children without that health problem, at least!

No one in my entire family has Crohn's, just lucky me...you never know where the genes are going to fall! I have a congenital heart defect that I had a very high chance of passing on to my son, along with a blood clotting disorder (I didn't know I had it until AFTER he was born). Odds were not on my side for either of those conditions and yet my son was not born with either one. I had a echocardiogram done on him in the womb just to be sure his heart was okay... and it was! it's amazing the power of the 10% chance! there is 10% for a reason...10% of children didn't get it...lol. My 6 year old has NO tummy troubles yet either. I had them from birth.

Keep your thoughts positive and your hope alive... you never know. If i had of thought of the odds of my genes, I might never have had my beatufil incredible son. And I can say, I'm sure glad my Mom had me anyway! LOL. and like everyone says, even if your child has CD... he/she is still going to be a beautiful worthy child, fully prepared from watching you live with it every day.

4 kids, none with Crohns that I'm aware of. (One did get tested - negative)
