I had two bowel resections last fall and had a temporary colostomy. I had a reversal in May. I had some issue with excessive diarrhea since the surgery and talked to my surgeon about it at my final follow-up appointment (2 weeks ago). He prescribed me to take 2 grams of cholestyramine once a day to help decrease the diarrhea and bowel salts (due to resections). I have also had a lot of issues with burning after each BM. The cholestyramine has slowed the diarrhea but not solved the burning. I can only describe the sensations as having a piece of cactus that is on fire between my cheeks. I have been taking tylenol to try and control the pain. It has not helped. I have called my internalist and have an appointment with him tomorrow. My quesstion is has anyone else had similar issues? If so, what did you find that helped?

I understand what you are talking about completely!!  I had my resection in Feb. and I have been dealing with the bile burning my rectal area.  It something I am going to have to live with the rest of my life my doc said.  I use prescribe hemmoroid cream to help the burning feeling.  other than that I am just in pain I would be interested if anyone has any suggestion as well!

Wash the area after EVERY movement. You wanna wash those bile salts off that skin. Wiping isn't enough, WASH. Maybe think of installing a bidet.

Lucille, Questran or other such product should help. You might also want to keep some type of gel handy such as A & D ointment, etc. to use after washing.

I had a resection 2 yrs. ago. Most of my colon was removed plus 1 1/2 feet of my small bowel. I've had severe diarrhea ever since. The colon absorbs water so with most of the colon gone, watery bowel movements are inevitable. I've tried just about everything and nothing seems to work. I also have trouble with the burning. When I'm having a bad day, I put spread vaseline around the rectum area. It keeps the liquid from touching the skin and helps with the burning. I agree that cleaning the area helps also. Do you have trouble with gas? It seems that since surgery, I very, very seldom pass gas randomly like the average person. The only time gas passes is during bowel movements. Although I go to the bathroom frequently, I still have problems with bloating and tender belly.

I found after each resection it took approx 5 months or so for my bowel to "adapt" and get rid of that fiery burning feeling and living in the bathroom. I just had a ileostomy reversed in January and the "burning" really just got better May/June...but when it did, it was alot better...oh, and codeine for the diarrhea

I take questran to bind the bile. I also use baby wipes after going to the bathroom. It really helps a lot, if I dont use the wipes I feel like my butt cheeks are like sandpaper.

I get the same thing, but only when I have the "D". Boy does it burn. My doc says that it is my internal hemmies that are burning.
