Humira and Anaphylactic Shock

We do have people on the forum who have experienced this type of allergic reaction to Humira, but their reaction developed relatively slowly (over hours), giving them time to get to hospital.

It is possible, likely even, that you will have your first injections under medical supervision, as you (I presume) need to be taught how to give yourself injections, so don't despair or worry too much: you may not be alone if something goes wrong. If you really are worried, I suggest asking a friend, relative or neighbour to sit with you while you inject, or actually asking if you can have the first injections under medical supervision, just to put your mind at ease.

Your doctors should know about your fistula already, surely?

I did my first 4 injections at the doctor's office. The nurse wanted me to stay for an hour to see if anything "off" happened. I had my BF with me, so we just left - and she told him to "keep an eye on me." When you go for your injections, maybe just plan to bring a book with you and hang out for a few hours? I gather that if you're going to have a bad allergic reaction, that it's sort of immediate. You could ask your doctor in advance if you're really concerned. Good luck!

Good advice Elexis! Benedryl is frequently used to stop drug reactions. I developed anaphylaxis to Remicade (twice) and the nurse gave 25 mgs of benadryl in my IV. It stopped the reaction cold in 30 seconds - it was totally gone. I then got one humira shot (my doctor was being cautious because of my remicade reaction) and 4 days later I developed hives. They gave me Benadryl and a steriod pack. Just make sure you tell your doctor of any drug reactions you have ever had. Now I keep benedryl liquid or film strips on hand. They both work very fast.

I am in the 2% that can take Humira. It is more than likely that you will take it with no problem and it could help you greatly!
