Hello, I don't post much, but what does everybody take for iron. I am supposed to take Slow Fe 325mg 3 times a day. I just can't tolerate it but I need some sort of iron. What do you all take? Thank You, Kay

Solgar's "Gentle Iron," 25 or 50 mg daily.

I can't take any of the ferrous sulfates. The sulfer makes me so sick to my stomach.
I can use the gentle iron or Vitron C which has vitamin C as well as iron to help absorb the iron and is what is recommeded by my doctor.

i have found solgar's gentle iron to be the best. right now i'm using 100 mg/d.
dont use ferrous sulfate - it will constipate you which will cause other abdominal problems.
vitamin c is supposed to help the absorption of iron. dont take calcium with iron - they compete.
animal (heme) iron sources are better than plant (non heme) iron sources if you are going to go the food route. your body absorbs more heme iron than non heme as it is more bioavailable. heme sources: red meat, liver, lamb, bison, etc. non heme - spinach (spinach is best cooked to break down phytates and oxalates), leafy greens, etc.

I take a multivitamin with 18mg of iron. Seems to keep me in check.

Thank you all for your replies. I already take a rx prenatal vit and my iron levels keep dropping. I am trying to avoid a tranfusion so I am on the search for a new iron. Is the Vitron and Sytron rx or otc? The iron rx's that I have been given are very costly so I amtrying to find one otc. Thank you so much. Kay

Blood Builder -- it's heme Iron, meaning it comes only from vegatables like beet leaves. Works a wonder for me. NO side effects.

janicea -
if the iron source is from plants, it is NOT heme iron:
There are two forms of dietary iron: heme and nonheme. Heme iron is derived from hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that delivers oxygen to cells. Heme iron is found in animal foods that originally contained hemoglobin, such as red meats, fish, and poultry. Iron in plant foods such as lentils and beans is arranged in a chemical structure called nonheme iron. This is the form of iron added to iron-enriched and iron-fortified foods. Heme iron is absorbed better than nonheme iron, but most dietary iron is nonheme iron.

thanks for straightening me out on the heme iron. I clearly had no idea and I appreciate the info!

I take Se-Vate 21/7 tabs. It is a Rx but have not had any problems with taking it. This and Entocort EC are the only things that are keeping my Hgb up. It containes Ferrous Asparto Glycinte 70 mg Ferrous Fumarate 81 mg along with Succinic acid, Vit. C, Vit. c complex,Folic acid & Vit. B12. It costs me around $32 monthly & insurance does not cover it because it is a Vitamin. But i think it is well worth the money as these are keeping me out of hospital

Proferrin is the best I've found by FAR if you live in Canada. Don't think it's available elsewhere though, but it's a heme iron. Really expensive though.
