CT Enterography with milk

I have a CT scan scheduled for Thursday afternoon and i have to drink almost one liter of 3.25% milk when i go there an hour before.

Has anybody else done it? How was your experience with drinking milk instead of the usual clear solution they give you?

NO, this sounds rather odd to me. I guess they are using milk as contrast solution I guess.

Never heard of 3.25% milk. I've heard of 2% and Low Fat and Skim but not 3.25%

Not that it makes much difference. MILK! Blech! And a litre of it?? I'd upchuck long before I got anywhere near a litre down!!!

I wonder if this has come about because they radiate our milk now??? Its supposed to prolong milk's shelf life.

Hi there-

I had a CT Enterography done about a month ago.   I did some reading about the test ahead of time and found there have been some studies done on drinking milk in place of the oral contrast and that patients tolerated the milk better and the results were very consistent.  I did not have the luxury of drinking the milk, but I will tell you I would have preferred that over the oral contrast ANY day.  I have a really hard time with the contrast. 

Good luck with your test!  I'm having my 4th CT scan in less than a month on Thursday and will be drinking the yucky contrast.

Oooh. I hope they give you a choice about it, considering how many people have an allergy or intolerance to dairy.

CrohnieToo, 3.25% is regular milk. Not skim or fat-free. It has more calories and fat than the other kind.

I looked it up online, and there have been studies done with the milk being used as opposed to the oral contrast they give you and seems to produce the same results. Although, i never really had a problem with what they give me usually.

I've never drank that much in one day so i don't know how tolerable it'll be for me. One glass i'm usually ok for the rest we'll see i guess.

  skull oh god if i had to drink milk of that amount it would be out of my system before i got the CT scan i really can't tolerate milk at all. Bev x

I'm getting a CT Enterography on Thursday too! I just picked up the contrast. Looks like water (it's called Volumen), but it's 3 freaking bottles! I don't know how I'm going to drink all that it one hour.

So how did the milk prep go? My Volumen went okay. This test sure beats the socks off a small bowel series! Preliminary results...I have thickening at the ileum. Already knew that, but hopefully I will get confirmation that only a tiny part of the small bowel has a stricture.

So i had my test yesterday. Instead of drinking that liquid they give you in one hour i had to drink the milk.

Every 15 minutes i had to finish a glass. After the 2nd one it was already getting though so imagine after the 4th one. I tried not to throw up. Best is to drink slowly. But if you're lactose intolerant then you better skip it.

Other than that everything else was the same.

Oh and i did have to take 4 pills of Dulcolax the day before. It went well also. Wasn't too bad.

I got to drink the Volumen at home. It said to start 1 hour before my appointment, but since that would have meant drinking it in the car, I started early. I drank 1 container in a half hour, drank a second container in a half hour, and then quit. When I got to my appointment, I chugged half a container right before going in. Even though I was a 1/2 container short of what I was supposed to drink, I don't think it made a difference.

I like milk, but I don't think I could have drank that much at once.

Off topic, but Miss_82 - I saw in another thread you're from Montreal, I am too! Who's your GI? I may have to switch doctors soon because mine doesn't specialize in IBD.

Hi Valerie, I'm at the Royal Vic with Dr. Alain Bitton. He's nice. I mean he tries to help me and all but never seems to have time and actually talk, go into details and all. But he's very involved in researches and all so he knows what he's doing.

When I couldn't hold down the prep they just had me drink water and it worked fine.
