I have forgotten (or blocked!) how miserable colonoscopy prep is.

It's not the time in the bathroom that bothers me, it's that disgusting gallon of liquid I have to chug. It's taking all that is in me to not throw it all back up. Augh.

Oh it's awful, I had to do it recently - twice in the space of 3 weeks - and it doesn't get any easier!! To make it worse, the 1st one i did didn't work properly for some reason and just left me mega-bloated and feeling like I was going to throw up! and didn't kick in until the next morning at 2am, 3am, 4am etc.... urgh it's awful stuff!

Just try and think of how 'cleansed' you will feel afterwards :)

I have to go for one at the end of sept. Hope before then though as I am having horrible flares every other month if lucky or every other week. But blood test say there is no flare up. (what do blood test know!!)since I went un diagnosed for 10 years all because they only took blood test and x-rays. So I'm hoping the colonoscopy will tell me something new. I haven't done one in 5 years so I'm a little nervous, remembering how I felt everything the last time and threw up for days after!

My instructions said to drink the water slowly - all 10 glasses of it. Twice. I spread that out over a couple of hours each time and it seemed to work as it should....

Hi Aimee,

I know what you are going through.  That stuff is gross ! !  What I usually do is I mix a small bit of sprite (7-up) with each jug full and it kinda takes that awful taste away.  Have been doing this for years and have no problem with them doing the colonoscopy.  Hope this helps.  Good luck :-)

How come I don't remember them making me drink anything?! they just empty by body by the liquied iv (in the butt) but I never had to drink anything. werid,I wonder why?!

Hi the last time i ever had one of them was when i was diagnosed at 13 never had to drink anything then and didn't have any sedation it was horendous even thinking about it now makes me shudder i hope things have really changed since then! Bev x

I gag every time i smell something that reminds me of that disgusting lime flavored prep. i mean really, lime!? could they have picked a worse flavor for a disgustingly thick liquid that you have to chug? whats wrong with cherries, or strawberries?!

I have a colonoscopy scheduled for next tuesday and they are making me mix miralax with gatorade. Has anyone ever had this prep? And if you have Is it as gross as the jug of s**t!

I can't believe they did away with the Fleet Phosphosoda. That was the only thing I could tolerate because it did the job without having to drink tons of liquid. What other option is there that has less fluid to drink? If something tastes bad, I just throw it up.

Next time ask your DR if you can take the pill prep. Visocal? not sure if I spelled it correct.
I did the pills my last colonoscopy, much better then the liquid drano, lol.
It was 4 pills every 15 minutes.

can someone please  explain to me why all of you have to drink stuff, but I've never had to like I was saying the stick an iv of water and whatever up my butt , they empty the water in me and about 10 mins later, I'm in the bathroom and everything I've eaten my entire life leaves my body with in 15 mins. No one else goes through this?

I'm confusing, are they doing it right or wrong with me?! should I be drinking something?! (not sure if I would be able to even hold any of the crap down tho)

Tracy - that's an enema, there's nothing wrong with doing it that way, it's just another form of prep. I've never even been offered it, but I have a really hard time with preps so it must make it easier.

Pico Salax is the best one that you can buy in terms of taste, it really just tastes sort of like Tang, just not as pleasant, and it's just 2 glasses spaced out. It's supposed to be the easiest on your system as well. The first time I took it, I was really sick and probably should have been hospitalized, but I almost ended up in the ER, I actually thought I was going to die, I couldn't breathe, I was throwing up every 2-3 mins for hours, awful pain, etc. The second time I took it, it went a lot smoother though, except that it look forever to start working, so I wasn't fully cleaned out for my test (was at 8:30 the next morning, so I didn't have a lot of time).

The gallon jugs of prep are awful - I tried it once and drank about 2 glasses before giving up and switching to Pico Salax. Never again! lol.

Thank you so much for explain, I truly understand now. My way you for sure are cleaned our for the test. But it's hard of the body.

poor thing you. These test are horrible, but the only way sadly. I wish non of us had to go thru this. wishing everyone the best of luck for their test.

It is disgusting. My GI wanted me to drink 2 full bottles of that vile crap. But I couldn't get through but 1 and a half. My colonoscopy went just fine. I wish I'd known I could've had coke the day before. .... Best of luck.

When I need to prep, I just don't eat for at least 12 hours prior to the procedure (last time it was about 18 hours and worked nicely), and I ended up only having to drink a few cups of the drink. Works great.

I did a liquid diet only for 2-3 days prior and actually only had to drink half the gallon before things went clear. Still absolutely vile but at least I didn't have to drink the whole thing. I also didn't have any cramping or pain - which is amazing!

I swear by the liquid only thing prior. Fasting would also work, but I love food too much! ;)

I'm glad the rest of your prep went ok Aimee - good luck with your procedure!

For my last colonoscopy I did Osmoprep pills which were not bad. It's a lot of pills but I didn't gag or feel nauseous.

My GI said they don't use the pills anymore. There was some concern about it, but I don't recall what. I've since had several friends tell me their docs won't allow the pills either.

The pills made me horribly sick. A couple weeks ago I did it again, 4 liters and no pills. A million times easier. I did not mind it at all. My GI said he also no longer gives the pills. Also said it was probably easier this time because I was in remission. Maybe.

I just got it really cold and chugged each glass through a straw as fast as I could. Got it over faster and no time to think about it. Also helped to have my daughter around. I made funny gulping noises each time and then she'd giggle. That certainly made it a LOT easier too. Hope everyone is as lucky the next time around.

My doctor said that there is a concern about the kidneys and all the pill clean out!!

There is a concern that the pills may dehydrate people too much. They're not recommended for the elderly or people with kidney problems. I drank more liquid than I was supposed to, and drank them all with Gatorade to make sure my electrolytes stayed up. Luckily, I did not have any side effects from these. I'd be really sad if my doctor stopped prescribing them!
