Did anyone have "growing pains" when a child?

Huh, never heard of a possible connection. I had terrible growing pains in my shins on 2-3 different occasions growing up. I was told it was just the bones growing...

That's what I was told, too. I wonder how many of us on this forum had growing pains as children. I know I read recently that such pains may be indicative of autoimmune disorders. Interesting, indeed. Do you all also have Crohn's-related or other arthritic/joint issues.

Yes. Very badly. I was later diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I had growing pains and a variety of other weird, undiagnosed symptoms since toddlerhood and I now realise that these were most likely fibro all along.

Wow!! I had a nightly ritual of my father putting deep heat and bandages around both knees. At the end of the day, I couldn't really walk or stand...Sometimes in the middle of the day if my mom went on one of her marathon shopping trips. They, the doctors, could never find the reason for the severe pain and swelling every night. It started when I was 2 and ended when I was around 11...when I stopped growing...except at about 23 when I grew another inch...late growth spurt. Some doctors tried to say that it was due to my flat feet...had to have devices in my shoes for the longest time...All these years later and I still remember the pain...

I don't know anyone that didn't have growing pains as a child, that is normal and everyone experiances them, doesn't mean they're doomed to having an autoimmune disorder, all of my friends and family had growing pains and most of them are healthy as horses.

That's interesting. NONE of my friends had growing pains. Neither did my husband, and none of my friends' children my son's age have experienced them yet. So it's not a given that every child has them. I'm sure it also doesn't mean you're doomed to a condition, but it is interesting in the short time this has been up how many quickly responded they had them as well. These are not the kind of pains one would forget having, so I'm not talking a casual ache here or there. They are long and lingering and excrutiating to a child. They certainly brought tears and hours of me curled up in a near fetal position sitting on my legs and feet to try and relieve the pain. I'd have my parents massage them and I'd be swabbed down in Absorbine Jr. My son is experiencing the same thing.

Yes, as a matter of fact I did.  Never heard it was anything more than just "growing" pains though.  My daughter who is now 18 used to get them alot but she's now 5' 9".  She has been checked for Crohns and Celiac (her dad has Celiac) and was negative for both.  Interesting though isn't it?

I was the youngest of three children...and we were only 1 and 2 years apart in age. I was the only one who had severe leg pains as a child, for several years. Every night I would lay in bed and cry because my legs ached. My dad had to massage them for me every night. I hated going to bed because that was when the pain started.

OMG yes! I had such bad knee pains from 'growing' and had to wear knee supports for a while, actually that was probably around the time that I first had symptoms of Crohn's in a weird way I always thought it was fortunate that I stopped growing when I was 10 (gotta love a bit of Crohn's stuntedness) as it meant no more 'growing pains'! I'd never have thought to associate that with the Crohn's....

Mine always occurred at night, too. So do my son's. Sigh.

It's typical of growing pains to happen at night, many kids will sleep right through them if they're mild enough while some are awoken from them usually if they're quite severe pains, I only felt them in my shins, never in the knees or anywhere eles...it used to make me wonder why I didn't feel it throughout my body considering my legs were not the only things that grew LOL!
