Why are mornings the worst?

I've been living with Crohn's for 20 years and the biggest problem for me is morning time. It's a struggle to leave the house before 10am because I can't be more than 60 seconds from a bathroom. It makes getting to work, traveling, or doing anything that requires leaving the house in the morning a major issue. Does anyone have the answer why mornings are so bad?

Maybe because our bowels wake up in the morning.  They are usually relaxed and slow to metabolize while we sleep.  For me, as soon as I take a drink or eat something, the pain begins.

I agree I hate the mornings. I am considered in remission right now, but I still have the rough mornings. Within about 5 minutes of waking up I am in the bathroom for the next 20-30 minutes. I then sit on the bed with a heating pad on my gut and put my makeup on. I usually don't start feeling better until my meds finally kick in. You are not alone.

My mornings are seldom bad. I hate evenings, digestion leads to cramping and pain.

Probably a combo of being without food, drugs, and water for hours on end. Lately I have been waking up with my kidneys hurting and having to take a 5 minute pee. That and my tummy/intestines hurt too of course.

I agree with the mornings being the hardest for me also. It was not always the case except for the arthritis and night time used to be the hardest. Since I have started my Cimzia I feel like I must be pregnant because I am so nauseated and sick every morning. This is a little crazy considering that I am a dude.

Emotionally, nights are bad for me, but crohn's wise mornings are the worst. Usually the mornings are when I'm more nauseated, and after sleeping and waking up, my body has tons to get rid of, which makes getting ready a longer process.

Ugh I hate mornings. Within a few minutes of waking the fun starts. I go, take a shower, I go again, do my makeup, eat breakfast, go again, dry my hair, go again, iron my clothes, and if I am lucky (insert sarcasm here) I go again. On my really bad days I just give up and email my boss to let him know I will be working remotely for the day. What I find so strange is that on most days I won't have to go again for the rest of the day after a fun filled morning. On days where I don't go a bunch of times in the AM (meaning 3 times or less) I have trouble all day long which is fun at work. The morning thing is very strange indeed.

It's the nature of the beast with mornings...before I got sick I generally never had to poop in the mornings, usually noon was my calling time, I really miss how things were before I got sick, having to only go once a day and like clock-work and being able to hold it in if it wasn't convienent to "go" (no bathroom around), although I rarely ever did that. But I remember the first day that I had muliple bowel movements (which were all still fully formed and normal looking) I knew something was wrong cuz I never had to poop that early in the morning in my life and I certainly didn't have to keep pooping moment after moment either.

Its the same for me..i have always gotten up early enough..so my bowels will have time to do their thing..so i won't be late for stuff..

See we are never alone in our fun :). The only time I get a break is when I am on prednisone or heavy doses of pain meds. Other than that I am up at 6 am to allow for extra "special" time and I leave my house at 9:15 to avoid sitting in rush hour traffic...for all the obvious reasons. I am thankful and lucky that my job is flexible....which they should be considering they expect me to be available whenever they need me. Technology is a blessing and curse all the same.

This is exactly what is happening with my husband. His mornings are terrible. He gets up, takes a shower, and then the fun begins. Usually, the pain is so bad- then he has diarrhea- by 2 pm, he may have had 10-20 rounds of diarrhea, and then he is "ok".. meaning he might have little twinges of pain, but he is hungry and actually wants to eat.

We don't have an official diagnosis, yet. The doctor is very suspicious of this, though.  He has had this for 20 years, and each year, he has more and more bouts of this. It always happens in the morning, and it doesn't matter what he ate the night before.  He has reflux, and takes meds for that, and had high blood pressure 10 years ago that has been treated and in good control. He is tired all the time- 10 years ago, he had a colonoscopy which showed nothing suspicious- nor indicated crohn's at the time, but the doctor said that can actually change over time. He is now 51, and has these episodes 1- 4 times a week, and then might go 2 weeks or more and not have any problems. THe longest he goes now betweeen flare ups of some sort is about 2 months, and thenwhen he does have an issue, it always lasts about a week, and then spontaneously goes away, jus tlike it came. His bowels return to normal, etc..

HIs blood work was all whacked out- he had some elevated results and some lower then norm results.. so they have referred him on to a specialist.

He never has any bloody issues, just watery diarrhea, lots of it, and lots of pain.

He also has some weird rash on his back that just developed a few months ago, it is on the back of both shoulders,near his shoulder blades. I don't know what that is.. or if it is anything.  I just can't wait to get to the bottom of all of this, and figure this out.

nyone  who might have some insight I would appreciate it.

My problems are similar to yours in the A.M.
What I did wrong was avoid breakfast and lunch.
I did much better at work on an empty stomach.
I ate one meal a day which lasted from 7PM TO 11PM.
I slept from 11PM to 3:45 AM.I went to the bathroom,
and threw up from 3:45 to 6AM,then went to work...

Now post surgery I'm doing great with more sleep,
two light meals a day and lots of snacking.I also take
all my meds.My bowel movements are much shorter,
3-6 a day,and I get morning sickness about twice a
month. Every morning when I wake up I get this wild
cramp in my left calf when I stretch and yawn.(dehydrated) shocked

christinakm, if the colonoscopy was clear then he should have small bowel testing since CD often affects the small intestines (and usually starts there, not always though), there's also a chance that he has microscopic colitis, so when he had his colonoscopy they should have taken biopsies to see under a microscope if he has microscopic colitis aka; collagenous colitis.

If he's never had blood issues, he may be a severe case of IBS.

i totally agree. mornings suck. about 7 am my stomach starts to rumble and i know within a few minutes it's time for the fun to begin. all morning long i'm running to the bathroom. then strangley enough it stops after a couple of hours and i can go the whole day without going at all. it depends though. sometimes i do have to go throughout the day again but rarely. it's so weird. and god forbid i have to be somewhere early in the morning like for example my son has to be at school by 8:45 so that would mean i would have to wake up at like 5:30 just so i can have ample time to go. it sucks truley. and if like i have to travel somewhere far away and i have to leave early it's even worse cuz the worrying of the diareah makes it even worse. it's weird how we all have the same thing going on in the mornings. fun huh? it's like our own little dysfunctional club. =)

hmmm...some thoughts..."fight or flight" is paired with "rest and digest"(one of the physiology mnemonics). The body spends all night digesting, but in the recumbent position, it doesn't "come out", so to speak (however, some people have issues in the middle of the night). As soon as you sit up, it's right there, and you need to empty it.

One of the reason's considered for "runner's trots"...body in the flight mode, so it doesn't really get to digest correctly...so food has a fast transit time. Read it in "Runner's World" some time back, when I was running. These "trots" are common with distance runners.
