Hi first time post ,I am curious if people with Crohns have had a bad reaction to a flu injection and what the side effects have been,my wife has Crohns and had a flu injection and has arthritis like problems ,not sure if it is because of the flu injection or combination of both the Crohns and injection, Thks Dogsy :

I have never had any problems with the flu shot and my doctor urges me every year to get the flu shot.

I've had the flu jab every year for about 6 years, just waiting for the swine flu one to come available! Never had any problems except maybe a slightly dead arm wink

I've been getting my flu shots faithfully for the past 5 years with no problems. In fact the company I work for gives out free ones every fall.

I am with all of the above, I get a flu shot every year and never have had a problem. The flu shot is a NOT a live virus, just fyi.

I haven't had any longterm problems (that I know of)from flu shots; however, for a day or two after getting them I generally get a slight fever and become achy all over. This reaction is not uncommon.

some pains aren't uncommon for a few days after flu shots. I too get mine every year with no side effects. plus I'll get the swine one too when its available.

No side effects from the flu vaccine.  In fact, we fall into the high risk category so it's important for us to get one.  There is not "live" virus in the vaccines so the shots, by themselves, should not make you sick.  I know this from working in a health clinic for the past 8-yrs.  I hope you feel better soon.

The doctor asks me if I have any joint pain every time I see him, so it seems as stated above that there can be some sort of reaction.

Anyhow... the medication I take for Crohn's is also used to treat Rheumatoid arthritis.

The article indicates that indomethacin was used for reactive arthritis, so maybe it is a bit different....

I have taken the flu shots for years, and I have never had more than a sore arm for a day or two. I agree with ISF that we are consider as having underlying conditions and should take the shot. IMO

I got the flu shot about 6 years ago and got really fluish for 2 days...Dr. told me it was a fluke. So the following year I did it again...Same thing happened! Flu like symptoms throughout my whole body. really stunk! Once again the following year my Dr. reccomended I get it...did it again...FLU again!!!
I don't get it anymore! I'm nervous about H1N1... just been a big hand washer and praying...

Flowery are you by any chance allergic to eggs? That could have been the cause of your reaction. Just a thought.

According to the CDC itself, a NORMAL side effect of getting flu vaccines is feeling achy and having a fever.  Check out these CDC links.

These normal side effects do not mean that it causes a person to contract an illness from it.  (Think of side effects such as from medications.  Some people get them and some don't).  Also, having an egg allergy (and then receiving the flu shot) would most likely cause a more serious reaction.

Thankfully, I have never had a problem receiving the flu shot. My GI always recommends it. No side effects or anything. This is the first season that I am off Humira, so I will be curious to see if it makes any difference.

I have had a "regular" flu shot each year for 10-12 years. One year I still got the flu. My present GI Dr. said that he would approve the regular flu shot for me.  So far he is not recommending getting the H1N1 shot for his Crohn's patients. He said he does not have enough information about the actual H1N1 shot content as yet.
