I have been awarded SSDI 2007, dropped from long term disability(LTD) after 2 yrs(2007-2009)am appealing right now, & just been denied life insurance from my husbands employer due to CD.  So SSDI knows I can't work, LTD just messing with me I believe & now the denial of life insurance.  Basically, cd too bad to work from SSDI, LTD not bad enough - can work, now life insurance too sick to be insured.  What the heck?  Does anyone have any suggestions for me regarding life insurance issue? Anyone in the same situation? Thanks for all your replies in advance(I hope someone replies).  Bless you all!

What?! People with Crohn's Disease can't get life insurance?  My daughter's only NINE and she can never have life insurance??? Is this some kind of joke? confused

Trust me this is no joke!!!  I am so mad about it, talk about confusing, I probably will appeal.  They also stated cuz of my rhuematoid Arthritis NO I don't have it, but they seem to think I do.  I was just wondering if anyone had this experience?  I did have a small life insurance with long term dis, but when they dropped me, that dropped too!  Unbelievable!  Maybe they didn't give it to me cuz I'm the spouse?

She should be able to get the standard life insurance offered by her employer, when she starts working. For me, anything over 100k requires a medical history form and I was turned down for additional coverage due to crohn's and melanoma-in-situ. A few years ago, I worked for a tiny company (4 employees) and we had to obtain our own medical insurance. My boss told me to lie on the application so I wouldn't get turned down, but I wasn't too keen on insurance fraud, so I didn't lie. I didn't get insurance. Then I got fired. He was a jerk anyway. But yes, having an incurable life-long disease will make it difficult, if not impossible, to get life insurance independently.

I have life insurance thru my work, but I don't know what will happen when I retire, as that is not one of our retirement benefits. I have tried to apply for other life insurance policies, but was denied because of my Crohns too.

My husband was able to get me life insurance through his employer and I now have it through mine. But, when I was on his I was limited to a smaller amount due to the crohns. Keeping the Faith - if you have SSDI your long term disability will be off set by those payments. Unfortunatly, you can't double dip. That is why they force you to apply. It is really annoying. So if your LTD was $800/month and your SSDI is $500/month your LT now only has to pay you $300. On top of that, you need to read your policy. Most change after 2 years. Originally they look to see if you could do your current job. After that they look to see if you can do ANY job. The fact that you receive SSDI is just one thing they consider but not the final say. They can still decide that based on their guidelines you could do "some" job.

Thanks Fitz, I do think I was denied the life insurance cuz of the amount too, I'm going to appeal & request a lower amount, funny though, they have no problem taking the cost out of my husbands check!

My husband's work does not offer life insurance so we are getting it independently thru State Farm (who also covers our house and cars) and they quoted me at $80-$100/month for a $25,000 policy of term life insurance. We aren't covering me at this time because we can't afford it but it's something we hope to do in the future.

If you are employed and they offer life insurance, I don't believe they can deny you a policy (under a certain amount anyways) because of a pre-exsisting condition. It was explained to me this way anyhow...although I can't say for sure because I'm not employed anymore.

Also if you are a parent (and your child has not been dx'd) you can get a policy that would convert to whole life insurance and IF they were later dx'd it wouldn't factor in and they couldn't be denied coverage... just something extra we learned from our agent since crohn's "seems" to run in families.

I have life insurance through my company but when we got my husband's life insurance policy independantly since he can't get it through his company, they denied me because of my crohn's. We were trying to get more on me should something happen to my job, etc.
