Well im 6-7 weeks pregnant...and worried about all the test's i've had!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi guys,

I took a test yesturday after I had some nausia (which also came with that gut feeling) and it came back with two blue lines....and after I had a blood test to see how far along I am it came up 6-7 weeks

My husband and I are a bit scared because in the past 6 weeks I have had:

MRI scan
Small bowel follow through with about 10 x-rays
huge amounts of panadine forte, neurofen plus, endone
went into hospital and was on 400mg a day of cortisone steroid and pethidine
2 more x-rays
a colonoscopy/gasteroscopy
pill cam
iron infusion

Right now we are both scared to death that we have seriously harmed the baby and was hoping some of you have experienced the same thing and have had happy normal babies....

The other fear I am left with now is the fact I cant take ANY pain medication or the infleximab infusion I was scheduled to take :-( We are very blessed though to have another addition to the family so we are happy, just scared.

i am not a hundred percent sure so you need to ask your doctor but i think that during the first couple of weeks you may be safe from the harming of the baby. if you are really worried i would consult your doctor.

Didn't they ask if there was a chance you could be pregnant?  They always ask me that for like every single test I do. And if I say yes, there is a chance...they make me take a pregnancy test right there before they will do anything else.  Ive also heard during the first few weeks it shouldn't harm the baby.

But anyways, just a little advice for the ladies...when dr's ask you if there is a chance you could be pregnant just say yes every time. Unless you know 100% that you absolutely are not.  Better safe then sorry.

I am not sure if the tests would have hurt your baby or not, best to talk to your OB about that. Also why can't you take your Remicade infusion now? Many women on this board have had successful pregnancies and healthy babies while on Imuran/6mp, Remicade and Humira. The thought is a healthy mom produces a healthy baby. Good luck and congrats!

Well actually I missed my period for the first time and after a couple of days I took a test for that reason because i knew I had tests coming up and was on lots of pain meds but it came up negative so I just assumed that my periods had stopped because of weight loss and sickness, I must have taken the test a day or two too early because as it works out i am :-( such bad luck seeing as I was on the ball.

I remember getting the small bowel follow through and getting all those x-rays looking at the posters on the wall (with a baby saying "please mum tell them im here
") and at the time I said to my self, well lucky I checked because that would be really bad. It makes me want to cry every time I think about it because Im one of those mums who doesn't even spray fly spray when Im pregnant so to be on all those drugs makes me feel so bad and scared that it may cause some deformity or defect that could affect my child.

Honestly..i am not a doctor..but my opinion...is no..i don't think you have hurt your baby...usually...these things are an issue..when they are happening over a long period of time...and its a good sign...that despite..everything you have been through..you are still pregnant..with your little cute adorable super swimmer! So the fact that you are pregnant is proof...that things for now..are okay. I don't suggest worrying..you are aware of the pregnancy and you may need to make some changes to the tests administered and the meds that you are taking. Congratulations!

I wish I could tell you something for sure. I would contact your OB/GYN right away and get in for an appointment. It certainly isn't the "best case scenario", but women do all kinds of stuff before they know they are pregnant and they have healthy babies born. So, don't freak out too badly.

As for your infliximab- yes you CAN get your infusion. I had 2 healthy babies while taking it from conception to delivery to breastfeeding. They are 5 and 3 years old and healthy, intelligent children.

Thats interesting because when I told my doc when I was in for an iron infusion he didn't even look like he was even going to debate wether or not too go through with it, although...I wonder if that because he doesn't think my flare is severe enough to go onto to it especially when im pregnant. He did also mention to me when i asked about pregnancy and infleximab that i would have to be on it for 6 months before I started trying for a baby?????? Different opinions I guess. I was really looking forward to it because I am so so sick of this flare but also reliieved because I hate being on anything when im pregnant even if I am sick.

Meanwhile an update on the pregnancy is that i have been feeling so nausiated from the morning sickness and the usuall stomach problems I was having before with digestion etc so I am barely eating at the moment which has left me really hungry, grumpy, stressed and loosing weight :-( I still need pain meds but I have really restricted myself to one a day or less if I can help it of panadine forte which also makes me feel so guilty but the pain gets too much sometimes I wonder if its worse to be beside myself in agony or on the pain meds.

I love how after I saw my GI last when I was living non stop on pain meds and had all these un answered stomach problems and was bed ridden and very sick he said after I told him I was pregnant "just go off all the pain meds and if the pain and bowel/stomach problems persist come see me and we can discuss it" I couldn't believe it! he hadn't come to the conclusion to anything yet and all my testing and treatment was interrupted and he magicaly expects my medical problems to disappear because I had fallen pregnant...........my last inch of respect died there and then and I know it sounds really negative but I realised I am the only person who is going to be able to care or know enough about my condition so I will no longer look to him for answers.

I have also started seeing a Chinese herbalist and Naturopath so hopefully I can try some new tactics.

Wow. Cayer, seeing as you're now an even more complicated case, might it be a good idea trying to get in to see a gastro in one of the bigger city hospitals?

You might find it comforting to know that a lot of people with Crohn's find that their symptoms improve while pregnant - something to do with hormones interacting with the immune system, I think - so perhaps that will happen for you.

I am by no means a doctor but I have heard it is worse for the baby to have a stressed out mom in severe pain than it is to have a mom on a painkiller. A friend of mine had kidney stones while she was pregnant and the ER docs MADE her take IV pain meds b/c they said she could miscarry from the pain. She originally was going to refuse all of them but once she heard that was worse for the baby she took them. And how is this for a great survivor of a baby? A friend of mine had a false negative pregnancy test, got black out drunk the next weekend, found out she was pregnant, than in her 4th month (I think) of pregnancy had to have her APPENDIX out. So she had all the tests, the anesthesia, the surgery, and the pain meds, and her daughter is so beautiful and perfect and smart. So, your baby is probably fine and at the end of the day you have to take care of YOU first.

Hi There,

Just wanted to post a happy story for you. I was mid-flare when I found out I was pregnant. The pregnancy test was the last test before I should have started Remicade. I discovered I was already six weeks pregnant. I'd just had a colonoscopy, barium meal, chest x-ray you name it I'd had it within that six week period. Was on high dose pred, imuran and goodness only knows what else. Certainly some serious painkillers too but it seems like another life now.

I immediately had all drugs but pred and imuran withdrawn and I started pred dose reductions. Apart from morning sickness I was fine throughout my pregnancy. Probably more frequent BM's than a normal person but definitly more managable than at any point since my diagnosis. My son was born early and weighed 4lb 12oz but was fighting fit from the start. I had a post- natal flare up as I believe many women with crohns do but my docs were ready for it and made sure I was stocked up on my meds in advance. The flare improved much more rapidly than previous ones had, three months after giving birth to my beautiful son Charlie I discovered I was pregnant again. I was already on a reducing dose of pred that time and just continued the reductions as normal. I continued free of all other meds except imuran until the end of the pregnancy. Harry was born 13 months after his brother a little bigger at 5lb 8oz and equally robust.

I started Remicade three years after I had originally been going to but those three years were so joyful. Even before the remicade I found that the nature of my disease had changed following pregnancy. Flares were less frequent and seemed less painful than before. I have been flare free for over a year now thanks to Remicade.

the doctors will guide you right and if they are saying it's safer to take your pain meds than not put your trust in them. Best Wishes for you and all your family at this exciting and joyful time. Try not to worry and remind yourself that other women in as similar situation to you have gone on to have healthy happy babies.
