back and rib pain on left side

Has anyone experienced this? It started in the middle of my back, left side and has now moved around to my ribs. It doesn't hurt to touch and only really hurts when i stretch, it's not an ache if you know what i mean. I've had it about 3 months now and i've had a chest x-ray which was fine so i wondered if it could possibly be crohns related? Thanks in advance, kelly.

There is a condition called costochondritis which involves inflammation of the muscles and other connective tissue between the ribs and which can last a long time because you really can't fully rest those tissues. I doubt it shows up on xrays. Might try anti-inflammatories like tylenol for a few days and see if that helps.

Thankyou for the reply. Are anti inflammatories ok to take with crohns? I was under the impression that we weren't supposed to take them?

You can use Tylenol, but not Advil or Aleve type meds. I suffer with this myself (costchondritis), and the only things that help is heat and my prescription pain meds and rest. Hugs!

Thanks nanners, i'm in the uk and i don't think we have those meds over here. I have bought some ibupfrofen gel today so i'll try that. Can i ask you if your symptoms are the same as mine? The pain has moved from my ribs to my back again today and again it hurts most when i stretch etc, it's not a constant pain. Thanks, kelly.

NSAID (non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) are a no no for people with crohn's. Ibuprofen falls in the NSAID category. I'd highly recommend you stop taking them.

Tylenol in UK terms is just paracetamol. That's really the only over the counter pain killer that a person with Crohn's can take unfortunately. You should see if that helps manage the pain - and if it doesn't it may be time to visit the doc and ask for the good drugs :-)
