Disability Tax Credit - Canada

Hi there..fellow Canuck here.....i am in Ontario and have taxes done vy h and r block...they have never mentioned this to me in all the yrs i have dealt with them but i will check my last yrs return papers tomorrow am and see if there is anything on there okay will get back to you asap on this good question....lyn

I'm in Alberta and I get it (because of my CD), been getting it almost from the beginning of being sick (18 yrs now), it's a form that you and your doc have to fill out, it's very basic (1 sheet, 2 sided of a few questions total for both you and your doc to fill out and sign). When I first ogt approved for it they didn't ask for another one to be filled out until about 9 yrs later, then after that they requested I have one filled out every yr for the following 4 yrs then they sent a letter saying not to worry about filling one out for the future year or unless they ask again...I've always been approved (which is probably why they said not to bother unless asked again at some point in the future).

If you don't make enough of the basic total amount of income for the yr then your spouse can claim what ever portion you don't claim (which you wouldn't if you make under the basic personal amount for that yr). So it's great cuz even if you don't make enough money to use the claim your spouse can use part or all of the portion---my hubby claims the whole amount and it usually gets us back around 900.00 for the yr.

I might be wrong, but I was under the impression that one has to be on disability to qualify. That is why they check your status. This could be why it has never been mentioned to you if you are currently working. I will ck my forms from yesteryears and see if I can be of further assistance.

Yes Ann, you can send it in any time, you don't have to wait until tax time...as far as I've ever known, you don't have to be on disability in order to be eligible for the tax credit since they do say that "even if you're on disability it doesn't guarantee that you'll qualify for the tax credit and that you are allowed to make a certain amount of income a yr and you may still be eligible (I don't know what the certain amount of allowable income is though).

They may have changed things, so it's best to go to their website (the governments) and find out for sure.

Ya Lyn, they don't go out of their way to advertise the disability tax certificate, the only reason I knew about it was way back 19 yrs ago when my mom's husband at the time went on disability for lung cancer (he had surgery and recovered from it very well).

ya eh LOL...definitely call HR, they should have made you aware of this tax credit...I'm doing okay (been worse that's for sure) so I'm not complaining, hope you are doing well too, haven't seen you here in a bit (was missing ya).

On the forms I've filled out in the past (which have been the same form over all the yrs) there's a spot for bowel/bladder incontinance...it doesn't get specific about not being able to leave your home incase of "accidents" but each case is considered seperately on each individual case....it doesn't state that you have to be on disability to qualify, but I've read where it says that if you are on disability that doesn't mean you'll automatically qualify because it's totally seperate from disability.

Well as you may remember Mom passed away then within short time Dad ...then Howie up n left with his woman ...I think I had just had enough where I finally could not contain any longer and literally blew a gasket my hearing is totally gone from the IV meds for the pyoderma......When i woke up in hospital i was being fed by tube nd tubes eveywhere at the time ..i had lost about 30 lbs and got so deep into a mental depression thete was no way out i guess the doc said i over amped the brain lol...poor Cait can u imagine she found me like that son came from Alberta fr a mth to help out aqnd now I am just starting to get some of old self back ..I could not remembe things from early times ya know short term memory was blown for sometime I still have moments but am coming thru,i HAVE definitely been blessed with Cait she did everything moved us fo other place to here was at hospital al the time is still afriad to lv me for long peiods of time but seizures are slowly controlled now thank GOD...At first I could not even remember how to use puter and all kinds of things it has been a living nighmare..I do not take any day hour for granted anymore I came to close my friend......I guess it was just not my time i want to be around for awhile ya know ...my potassium level was apparently almost nil so am on that now too .......I am so happy to be back n seeing al my old friends n meeting new ones.......take care you and I am calling HR in the am or Cait will hqve to am waiting for the tty phone disabilty is footing the bill for that ....again be well and see ya on the boards.....luvs lyn

I definitely have urgency issues, I've crapped my pants at home on enough occassions let alone when away from home so my doc has no issues with signing the form for me when needed...you're right though Rider Fan, it is a shame that it's limited so much....I've never been one to be doubled-over in gut pain like many crohnies are and you'd think that would count for something, plus pooping (even only 5 on average times a day) often definitely leaves a person feeling pretty exhausted at times.

I think anyone with serious enough health issues should have some kind of automatic tax credit issued to them, working or not, especially those with chronic illnesses...I also think that CPP should not be limited to permanant disability but should also offer temporary disability which would really come in handy for those CDers that are having a particularly bad flare for a while but are then able to reach remission (or at least feel well enough to work again)....if only we lived in a perfect world eh.
