482 calprotectin value for my 15 year old

Hi again!!  I have been away from teh site for a while as my daughter has actually been healthy.  Last week she got the flu and it sent her into a flare. (no diarrhea, jsut wt loss)   Her doc will most likely be adjusting her meds.  He changed hospitals so currently I am technically without a gastro doc!!!

I feel blessed, though because I called him to (long story short) come to his new practice and told him of her symptoms.  He asked me to call her ped. adn order a calprotectin stool sample.  the results took several days to come back, but normal range is under 120 and hers is 482.  It is a marker for intestinal inflammation.  Could mean her meds aren't working or a new flare.  she lost 5 # in a couple days.  I am feeding her a lot of boost plus and trying to get her to eat more protein and veggies.  The problem is that she doesn't want to eat anything!  Today her vision was impaired.  (?)  Any advice from anyone out there?

She woke up this morning saying she saw shadows where her periphial vision would be.  I thought it was the onset of  a migraine, but she never developed a headache worth noting.  A couple hours into the morning the shadows disappeared and she saw just fine

 

I don't really have any advice, but I just wanted to say that I learn more from this forum than anywhere else. I'd never heard of calprotectin before - I will have to ask my husband's GI if they now do this test. It would be so nice to know whether it's IBS or IBD causing your symptoms, so you know if you need to treat, or just watch your diet.

I hope your daughter finds some relief with eating foods that are easier on the bowels. Maybe a short course of pred or entocort will help. I've also heard good things about enteral/elemental nutrition and that it is nearly as effective as steroids in inducing remission especially in children.

I hope your daughter gets out of this flare quick.
