Hi all - I haven't been officially diagnosed yet (it's been a year since all my issues started and I'm on my 3rd GI doctor!) but I have tested positive for the Crohn's antibody in my blood several times and am having a colonoscopy in December (my 2nd since January).  My first was clean except internal hemmies but no biopsies were taken so my new GI is going to take some and see what we get.  Anyway, I have had the worse knee pain off and on for years but here lately (probably the last 2-3 months or so) it has been horrific at times.  I often can't put any weight on my either of my knees.  I've been to a orthopedic doctor and have been diagnosed with arthritis and actually will have a MRI here shortly with a possibility of being scoped.  Now I know joint issues are common with people with IBD but my question is the orthopedic doctor gave me a prescription for Celebrex.  Being that NSAIDs are a huge no no for IBD patients, should I take it?  I plan on calling my GI doctor to run it by her but in the meantime I thought I'd get some feedback from here.

Any advice is appreciated!

I have a lot of joint issues from my CD. I don't see an Orthopedist, I see a Rhuematologist. He wouldn't even consider any of the NSAIDs for me. I had a couple of steroid shots and eventually did some acupuncture. I do take Aleve on my own, as a short term fix, but I don't think its good for me, and I wouldn't recommend anyone else do it. I just know that there are some days I can't make it through the day without it. So how was that for no actual answer, I do it, but maybe you shouldn't. wink

But seriously, you might want to see a Rhuemy. They seem to have a better handle on the auto immune joint issues.

Avoid the NSAIDS as they can cause bleeding and flares. We are only allowed Tylenol.

Hi yeah i would keep off them too i remember taking NSAIDS afew years ago for a swollen knee and was pooping blood scared me to death! my GP said it was due to taking these as they can cause internal bleeding all went back to normal once i stopped them( I didn't know at the time that us crohnies shouldn't take them)Bev x

Well I guess I'm going to confuse things a bit more. My doc said that Celebrex was the only NSAID that I *might* tolerate and after discussions with him I chose to try it. I've been taking it only when I really need it for almost 2 yrs now and have not had any problems with it.

I guess it really comes down to what you and your doc(s) decide together.

Thanks everyone!  I am still waiting to hear back from my GI doctor but we'll see what she says.  This morning my right knee has really been acting up so if I could get some relief that would be great.  But not at the expense of having more bathroom issues!  Yesterday I received yet another symptom of this lovely disease - a mouth sore!  Does it ever end????

When everything else failed to get my arthritis under control, my rheumy tried several other NSAIDS again (many others had already been ruled out because they hurt my stomach).  Even with my Crohn's being in remission, everyone of them hurt my stomach within a few days, even the ones that were coated or were supposed to be a little easier on the stomach.  Definitely see a rheumy and make sure the rheumy and your GI work together on your treatments (have one send copies of your labs, treatments, etc to the other).  Mine work well together but there have been a few times that my rheumy wanted to try something and my GI said NO when I asked him if it was okay.  I know now that he was right in saying no, even if it meant my arthritis would continue to flare.

NSAIDS are a no-no for IBD. Ask your GI about the celebrex. I am antibody positive too with diverticular disease and indeterminate inflammation in my colon. I told my GI about my positive antibody and they don't put a lot of faith in them. However, since I am not responding well to colazal, they are doing another CT scan and flexible sigmoid scope. Good luck to you. I hope you get some answers. A lot of people with IBD also have joint pain. These things can take a while to sort out too, I am finding that out for myself.

By all means clear all meds through your Gastro. That means even over the counter stuff.

Your Arthritis is IBD related so treat the IBD and maybe get some relief that way.

I suffered occult bleeding with Viox, Celebrex, Pepto Bismo. and Fosamax which was for Osteoperosis caused by the Prednisone. When it comes to meds, less is best.

Thank you so much everyone!  Believe it or not I am STILL waiting for my doctor's nurse to get back to me.  I left the message on Tuesday!  I called back again this morning and still I'm waiting.  I love the doctor but her nurse leaves a whole lot to be desired!  Anyway, I really appreciate all the feedback and wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving! (I'll be out of town starting Sunday and probably won't be back on before then so that's the reason for the early holiday greeting)

You could also ask your pharmacist if you have a good one. I have a really good one, and have a lot of faith in his opinion on medications.
