How long after surgery did the doc wait until he put you on Crohns meds?

I had a resection on the 6th of Oct and then on the 17th I had 5 abscesses removed from my pelvic area. I still havent gone back on any Crohns medicine and I am having problems with my pancreas. I was just wandering how long it was before you guys went back on crohns medicine. Should I be going back on soon or should it be a year or so before I go back on?

I resumed my weekly injections of Methotrexate two weeks after my resection.

Have an ultrasound scheduled for April and GI plans on doing a colonoscopy six months after that at which time we will reassess things.

I was first put on pentasa and 6mp about 8 weeks after my resection in January, however my dr did want me to start after about 4 weeks. My wife and I were planning on trying for a baby that spring, so my dr advised we try before I start medications (luckily we got pregers fast)! Im not sure how long it would have been if I were returning to the medicine though. I was not dignosed with Crohns until after my emergency resection, and then the medicine landslide started!

I think you need to talk to your doctor and get back on meds. I was put back on them at my 6 week check, but that is mainly because I said I want on them now. He was trying to tell me I did not need them, but this was after my second resection in 3 years, and I said oh yes I do. I have been on Asacol since. Good luck!

My doctor had the hospital give me my meds as soon as they stopped the morphine pump in the hospital.
I also never stopped my Remicade infusions. That is an excellent question,most Dr,'s forget to tell their patients!

I was like homeboy - I went in on pred and came out on pred. I resumed taking the MTX the following week.
I agree with the others, that you should be on some maintenance med soon.

My doctor and I did not talk about any medications until my follow up appointment well after I had left the hospital (following a small bowel resection). We talked about medicine as a "maintenance" option. I asked if this would prevent my Crohn's from returning. When he said no guarantees, we (or I) decided to forgo any medication. I think I made that decision in part of being frustrated at all the pills and steroids I was taking before the surgery (over 30 pills a day and still surgery) That was in 1994 and I have not used any medicine since. Believe me, I know I am lucky. I also was really lucky to have my doctor, who was also a top research scientists for Crohn's at a major research university. Everyone is different and the only advice I ever have is to talk things over with your doctor.
