What is in these things?  One of the vendors brought in some bagels, and I knew not to eat them, but of course I couldn't resist.  I only ate 1/2 of one and within 30-40 minutes I got cramps and had to run to the bathroom. 

I can eat bread no problem, margarine no problem.  So what the heck is in a plain bagel that gets to me everytime?  Anybody else have problems with them?

That's weird, Nanners, that same thing just happened to me. I had been eating pumpkin bagels during the fall with no problems but last weekend I had a plain bagel & felt like I had been stabbed in the gut.

Are they a homemade style bagel or more like the Thomases Bagels. Normally a bagel is just flour, water, and salt. If it is the Thomases type, then you got who knows what in them.

They were made from a local Einsteins Bagel's. I thought they were just simply made things like jay said, water, flour & salt. They sure sound harmless enough, but hits me hard everytime I eat one. Oh well!

I don't get diarrhea or anything, but after I eat one, I feel really full and bloated. I still eat them on occasion, though!

It doesn't really matter from where they are made, all the plain bagels, no matter where I got it hits me the same.

Could be the wheat then.  You know how CD and gluten don't go together :)  Food is very weird.  I am lactos intolerant.  If I drank a glass of regular milk I will spend all day in the bathroom.  I can eat cream cheese, ice cream, etc with no problems though.

Oh....!!!!!  the taste of a warm bagel...sigh! crispy on the outside soft and chewy on the inside! I dream of these things more than pie and cake....lol !!

Well, I believe there are egg in bagels. Maybe egg allergy? Also they are loaded, I mean loaded carbs! Which turns into our friend SUGAR... and according to the nutritionist this makes for "surgar dumps" ...ya know, the large mound in the toilet!!!lol...

Sometimes you just can't resist! I hope Santa puts bagels in my stocking this year! The no D ones... I know I'm dreaming..

At my previous job we had Bagel Wednesday (Bruegger's has them cheap that day) and they never bothered me much, unless I was already having issues.

It could be the type of yeast they use. Just a thought. Also bagels are simmered in water before they are baked so maybe they put something in the water? I love bagels, can't say that I've ever noticed that they bother me. I used to make homemade ones and now I may have to make a batch.......

Well when you are eating a "free" bagel who am I to say where they buy them. I just think it must be in something in the way the make them. I will just be a good girl and say no from now on. Its not like it gave me probs all day, just that one time about 30 min later.

I am not gluten intolerant so I am sure thats not it either.

Wow, no. Plain bagels have been about the only thing I could eat this past week. Weird how different we all can be.

I don't have any problems with bagels...I have problems when my fiance puts cream cheese on it, and I can't resist.

There is yeast in bagles (all bagles) and sugar is also in many bagle recipies.

Every Sunday I work out in the morning and then head straight to Detroit Bagel to get hot, soft and chewy on inside-crispy on outside (good description flowery) delicious bagels. I eat at least one with cream cheese and pay the price after, but on a risk/benefit analysis, I'll opt for a Sunday morning bagel every time!

I FEEL YA THERE!! I can not tolerate bagels either, it is sad! My wife and I use to frequent this local bagel shop with the BEST homemade bagels in the area. It is sad, I wish I could eat them without the pain. We now get our orders to go and head home for me to enjoy the goodness!

I dont understand how they can turn your stomach. They are always so cute, especially the puppies. Little tails in the air and cold nose's. Chasing rabbits or flying a Sopwith Camel like, Snoopy. By the way Nanners , do you know the best description of a puppy ??? Nose at one end, tail at the other and both ends smell....Oh,,sorry, I forgot you dont have a southern accent...never mind....

Montreal style bagels don't hurt me, but the bigger ones that most places have do. I'm not sure why! But I do love a good montreal bagel... mmm

Ok, have to ask...what is a Montreal bagel. And don't tell me a bagel from Montreal :) What makes it different from a NY bagel

I've never had a NY bagel! But montreal bagels are very thin and dense... and especially delicious!

Ok this is from Wikipedia:

In contrast to the New York-style bagel, the Montreal bagel is smaller, sweeter and denser, with a larger hole, and is always baked in a wood-fired oven. It contains malt, egg, and no salt and is boiled in honey-sweetened water before being baked in a wood-fired oven, whose irregular flames give it a dappled light-and-dark surface colour.

Do you think it might be a consitancy issue?
I feel like bagels are denser then normal bread?
