new symptom...is this part of dehydration or something else?

OK this is new and I don't like new things after having this disease this long....my tongue is cut up on the sides.  Not swollen feeling like I get when B12 is low, literally raw and puffy.  It is sore to the touch.  It feels like I was scraping it with sand paper.  Now the one side of my mouth feels scraped up.  This is the second time this has happened recently.  I am a little dried out from winter and I think I am low on my fluid intake, but it never caused this before.  Any help or have you had this?

When I first got sick, along with all the other weird extraintestinal symptoms that I had, I had what kind of sounds like what you have. My tongue was really sore and felt raw. Actually there were little parts on the tip of my tongue that were inflamed, and it made it hard for me to talk without a lisp. It almost felt like I burnt my tongue and it felt kind of dry. I also had a bunch of aphthous ulcers in my mouth. The hospital ended up giving me a mouthwash and that seemed to help, although it could have been all the other meds that helped too to get me out of the initial flare. I'm sorry, I can't remember what the mouthwash was called, but it had lidocaine, maalox and another ingredient in it, and it at least helped me be able to eat without too much pain.

OK now I have a ridge down the side of my tongue.  It looks like one long bump.  And my mouth started watering like crazy last night.  I am starting to suspect dehydration more, but the mouth things have never happened like this in past years when I was dehydrated.

Any other ideas folks?

It could be lack of nutrients, B12, folic acid possibly....some antibiotics can cause it too, cipro for example...it's probably a good idea to see the doc about it now rather than wait...are you peeing much? If you're peeing normal amounts then that wouldn't really point towards dehydration, I'm not a doc though so I'm just taking stabs in the dark.

Have you seen your doc yet HabsHockeyFan??  pb4 mentioned some good thoughts. Flagyl and Cipro can cause tongue abnormalities. As can other nutrient deficiencies. Alot of vitamin deficiencies, like vitamin B2 deficiency can cause sore lips and tongue. You definately should get it checked out. Not to forget that if there are creamy white looking spots it may just be oral thrush, a fungal infection.

I am told tongue wagging on cold dry days can cause this but I dont know. My old wagger gets little painful bumps on it from time to time. My mom use to call these lie bumps. Me tell untruths ?????? Nawwwwwwwwwwwww..

If your mouth is watering like crazy I don't think you're dehydrated.

Thanks pb and cam...have an appointment with my GP for 1/4. Will pester him about some lab results. I am not on any antibiotics. I am due for b12 at the end of next week...but have never had this before when I was due for it. May be it is that I have been eating crud lately...I just don't want to mess in my mouth...I have heard some of you folks with mouth issues and always felt lucky I did not have any.

Sniper my hubby would say that I have been tongue naggin', not just waggin' lately. And I can not tell a lie...we did just cut down our apple tree...please no wooden teeth though!

The closest thing I can relate to is that my tongue gets really disgusting when my acid reflux is acting up bad...I can barely stand to look at it and it feels horrid and hurts- it gets a thick yellowish furry coating on it mostly from the back and up the middle that will not come off, always feels like I have something stuck in my throat. Only goes away once my stomach gets back under control.
