Family history

I'm a little curious who else has family members with bowel problems. I happen to have a strong family history and, of course, I'm one of the lucky ones.

Maternal grandfather - Colon cancer at age 80
Paternal grandmother - Ulcerative colitis
Paternal aunt - Ulcerative colitis
Father - UC (colectomy in 2000)
Sister - Lymphocytic colitis

My family consists of people who don't go the doctor until literally the last minutes before we're completely gone. That said, I really feel that there are some missing links that would help very much in understanding why I was diagnosed with this. Even without a proper diagnosis, I CAN tell you that my maternal grandfather would not be able to leave the bathroom sometimes due to stress from his job, and I was exactly the same way pre-2008 concerning other responsibilities. My paternal grandfather has many of the same problems including horrible (and I do mean horrible) problems with heartburn and acid content in general. I believe they would be better were they treated, but they are extremely careful with diet. I believe part of that is to avoid a hospital. My maternal grandmother has arthritis, but I do not think it's anywhere near what one would call RA.

My paternal aunt also has crohns.... she suffered for many years before she got a diagnosis! I guess things weren't as easy in the 70s

I'm one of four kids and I'm the only one who has crohn's disease.  My great aunt on my mother's father's side had crohn's disease.  I remember my mother telling me she had a permanant ostomy that she had for a long time.  She lives to a ripe old age of 91.  She just died recently due to natural causes not the crohn's.  She once told my mother that getting the bag was the best thing she ever did for her health.  I personally don't agree with that.  I had a temp ileostomy for about three months and I counted every single day until that bag was gone and could go "normally".  Anyway and my grandfather's brother, my great uncle, died a couple of years ago of colon cancer.  So that is the hereditary lines of the disease in my family. 

I have some issues in my family. Not much is known about my father's side, but I do know that one of his daughters (my sister from a different mom) has issues with her bowels. My brother is also developing issues and recently told me that he's noticed them for years, so I know something isn't right with his bowels either. My great-grandfather also died from Colon Cancer. Other than that, that's all I know. Very interesting points brought up by other members. Good topic.

My dad had ulcerative colitis and a colectomy when he was 19. Other than that, nobody else in our family had issues. My first symptoms were SI joint pain, which both of my sisters have, so I'm really hoping that is not a sign they will get Crohn's.

My Mom and I were both diagnosed when our first born was a year old, but we both showed signs as children. I have 2 daughters who both show signs but nothing to the point of testing. Holding my breath until they have kids! My Mom's cousin has CD and her son has UC. Their uncle, my great uncle had what was called before he died, TB of the intestine. This was before Dr. Crohn's discovered Crohn's. So a big family history on my maternal side since I don't really have many relatives at all. And just recently, my Father was Dx with AS, so I'm waiting for that shoe to drop too, since that can run in families too and is an auto immune disease. Both my parents were only children and I only have an adopted sister, so biologically I am an only child.

My hubby and I made some kinda crazy gene pool... 2 of our 3 kids have crohns, hence the screenname. 1 dx at 10; 1 at 18. Previos to us, only hubby's side had bowel issues, but no crohn's.

My dad has crohns and back in the day, they thought it was an issue with his appendix. They opened him up, found a healthy appendix and unhealthy intestine so they cut out 3 ft of intestine. Now that he and his 3 male siblings are all above 50, each one of them ( my aunts got lucky), is diagnosed with crohns. I was diagnosed in my teens and am now in my 20s.

I'm the only one in my family with crohn's. Maternal gma had RA, but no one else had anything similar to CD.

Not too surprising that most of you aren't the only ones in your family with an IBD. Thanks for all the replies.
