Hi im in the hospital right now Merry Christmas! scheduled for a colonoscopy 2 days after a major flareup that put me in the emergency room on Christmas. im quite hesitant to have this procedure performed right after the flareup because of possible complications if they were to accidentally perforate the colon wall while my insides are still so raw from the flare up not to mention the unexplained infection i had which has my fevers up to 104 and down to normal for the first time today, any suggestions past experiences or educated opinions would be really helpfull. i am really curious about any tests that might supplement for a colonoscopy which isnt so invasive and possibly harmful in the early stages of recovery. or does it even matter? thanks for your help in advance

I'm so sorry you have to spend time in the hospital on the holidays :( Blah... I've actually never been in your position so I can't speak to any useful advice or suggestions.

I have had two colonoscopies while in a severe flare, in my rectum no less. GI's do them all the time, and the likelihood of perforation is very slim. It is often really helpful to have the colonoscopy, so that they can determine what is happening. In my case I was bleeding a great deal and needed to find out why. Only you and your doctors can determine if it is important in your case, but I would not worry too much if they are recommending the colonoscopy. You will likely have a sedative and/or pain killers so the procedure will be painless. The worst part is the prep while you are flaring, so be aware of that and ask them for something that does not require endless drinking. Others on this site can recommend prep stuff to you. I can't remember what I had.

When I was in the hospital last month they did a CT scan and then another one, no colonoscopy. I can't be 100% sure why they did one and not the other though.

I had two scopes, two days in a row in the hospital. They were in there to stop heavy bleeding, and I was in a major flare. Not my favorite time to have a scope, but sometimes it's needed. Seems a lot of us don't find out what's even wrong with us, until they get in there when things are active.

My husband went through two colonoscopies while during a pretty bad flare. Both went ok. These colonoscopies were done because my husband did not yet have a diagnosis of crohn's. The first colonoscopy established that he had a bad bad bad case of inflammatory crohn's, and the second was useful to see that there was some healing from the Remicade. Both times, the doc did not finish the colonoscopy. He stopped where the inflammation was really severe to avoid a perforation.

Trust your doctors to take care of you. Knowing how bad the inflammation is, can help figure out the course of treatment to take.

thank you for your quick responses! my father had a colonoscopy for diverticulitis and they perforated the wall and he almost died, and from what ive learned from doctors with an infection present it is even more difficult to mend such a mistake, this is why im mostly concerned

My husband had c-diff infection in addition to the crohn's, and they did 2 colonoscopies anyway - because they needed to figure out if it was the c-diff causing all the problems, or the crohn's. A perforation is definitely a risk, but we trusted my husband's GI to know the limits. My husband spent 45 days in the hospital getting diagnosed and treated for both crohn's and c-diff, and was on 120 mgs of solumedrol, and vancomycin and flagyl, and to this they added the remicade, which finally got him healing. So, it was definitely risky. But we know my husband's GI to be very cautious, and he we know he wouldn't push his luck in terms of the colonoscopy (ie. he wants to see what's going on in there, but a peek is good enough, he wouldn't try to go all the way through if the inflammation was bad).

Discuss it with your doc, and see what he intends to do. I think he's just going to see how bad the inflammation is, to see how you should be treated. But if you don't fel comfortable with it, you should be able to just tell him to first get you feeling a little better before going in for the colonoscopy.

That's the best you can do.

I have been in the hospital almost every winter, this is the first winter im not.
If you are not on your death bed I would wait till the swelling goes down.
There going to give steriods, antibiotics and maybe an anti tnf drug.
Start taking vitamin D3 right now, NOT just regular D because that is the synthetic form.
6 months ago I was bleeding so bad about a quarter cup of blood a day my ass was so inflamed.
I was about to go to the hospital once again.
So I took 10000 iu a day of vitamin D3 and all bleeding stopped in 3 days.
Dont ask your doctor about this, go online and read about it youtube has tons of info on there about it
Your doctor will just say thats to high of a dose or it wont help, its a bunch of bull crap.
Remicade is one of the best drugs that works for crohns and vitamin D3 works even better than that for me.
I went off all drugs in less than 2 weeks, I was on them all my life.

I can't offer you any recent experience, but I do know that I had a scope not long after a perforation already happened. I had ruptured myself, then had the resection, then they did a follow up scope not long after. I had no problems with my scope.
