I was prescribed Aloe Vera juice by a nutritional therapist who said that its benefit ( for myself at that point, anyway) came from re-balancing the acidity of the stomach, which supposedly becomes less acidic after sufficient time afflicted with some intestinal disorders. She specifically told me to avoid cheaper varieties because there is something in them which is filtered out by better manufacturers, and which can be a gastric irritant. I subsequently read that some manufacturers strip out the central stem of the leaf for this reason, while others just pulp the leaf entire.
It all seems to make sense to me, particularly since the said therapist was able to tell me what my medical history was
before I told her ! My take on this, especially given a dramatic subsequent improvement in my gut, is that she must know something about
disease processes in the gut.
I used a version sold by Holland and Barrett (in the UK) which had cranberry juice and sodium metabisulphate to improve the flavour - it tasted yummy !
After a while penury forced me to start mixing it with the cheaper unflavoured version.
Eventually I found myself drinking the unflavoured version neat, which just goes to show what you can do if you set your mind to it. (And your taste buds have all committed hara-kiri !
)
I think ExJohnson is referring to the SCD, that's the Specific Carbohydrate Diet isn't it...
