I went to my GI and surgeon for a follow-up last week...one of my main concerns is that since having my 3rd resection in November I had been going to the bathroom 20-30 times a day (prior to surgery it was 6-10).  My GI prescribed me immodium up to 16 pills a day.

I was on Lomotil before but he took me off of it because he said after a while I would build up a tolerance and it would stop working.  My question is, is prescription immodium the same as the stuff on the shelf? I assume he gave me the script because for 480 pills it only cost me a $5 co-pay, rather then $10 a bottle for 20 pills off the shelf.

Another question is I've heard before that Immodium can really upset the bacteria in your stomach, does anyone know about that?

Other then those few concerns, it has actually worked wonders for me, I take between 2-8 pills a day and I'm having normal, solid BMs 1-2 times a day.

I take lots of Immodium too!!! Same thing happened to me with Lomotil..it stopped working and gave me a headache. I take Prodiotics with it...I think it help with good bacteria. Before I started with the Prodiotics I had to take Flagyl often due to Fungi build-up! I hated taking that because it made me feel so sick all the time. Immodium has been a life saver. I didn't know you could get it prescribed ..I'm gonna ask my G.I. for a prescription because OTC get expensive when you take sooo much of it! Taking Immodium has helped me at least be able to grocery shop and get out once in awhile. I used to have to go to the bathroom 10-12 times a day and with Immodium it's taken it down to 2-3 times ...however, there are still days it goes up..but not to often.

I have had a lot of both small and large intestine removed,  and am currently on five grams of colestipol (generic colestid) once a day.   Additionally,  I take generic over-the-counter immodium (loperamide hydrochloride 2mg).    After years of experimenting with schedules,  I have found that if I take the 5 colestipols  when  I wake up,  then take 3 loperamide 1 hour later,    then another loperamide at lunch,  then 2 loperamide at dinner,  I have one "normal" bowel movement in the morning,  and another normal bm about a half hour after dinner.  Who could ask for more?   Now I only get the big D if I go off schedule with the regiman above.  (I also take one primadolphilus ruetieri probiotic each day)

But the real reason I'm writing is to let you know that you can get the generic immodium at a certain big box store that starts with a "C"  and pay only $6.00-$7.00 for 400 tablets!!!!  I also have noticed that some supermarkets and drug store carry their own otc loperamide hodrochloride for less than it costs to buy Immodium.   I hope this has been helpful to some who are overwhelmed by the cost of the Immodium.

I'm also on something like colestipol but mine is called Welchol, I take 2 in the morning and 2 at night...then I take the immodium as needed.  I also found that if I take more then 8 immodium a day I get constipated.

I was told recently by my GI that he could write a prescription for the Immodium if that would make it cheaper for me with insurance. However, I believe it's the same stuff.
