Hi everyone,

Sorry if this has already been covered but have been a bit worried.

I'm due to start 6mp however after doing a bit of internet searching, I keep seeing the word infertility coming up. This is freaking me out as one of the main reasons I want to get better (aside from obviously feeling better) is that we would like to have another baby.

I'm feeling very worried and don't know what to do. The GI said that the other option if I don't get on with the 6mp is Methotextrate. But it looks to be worse? And the GI said that he doesn't feel that it is effective with Crohn's.

Would be grateful of any ideas or stories etc before I start taking them.

We have had mom's with Crohns have successful pregnancies and healthy babies while taking meds such as Prednisone, Imuran/6mp, Remicade and even Humira. You cannot get pregnant while on Methotrexate, thats for sure. Good luck!

Most of the side effects and do-nots listed for 6mp are more for the high doses used in treating various cancers. At the usual dosage level for Crohns I don't believe infertility should be an issue. There have been a number of posts here from female patients (well no male ones for sure) who have conceived and had healthy babies on 6mp. To be sure I would consult with the OB/GYN you are planning to use and with your GI.

I'm expecting my second baby after taking 6mp for years. I never heard anything about infertility at the doses we take. First time around I got preg within 3 months of seriously trying. This time, I got pregnant super easy while still bfing and before my cycles were back to normal. Never thought it'd be that easy. Good luck getting healthy. It really is the most important step in having a safe pregnancy and healthy baby.

I was on 6MP throughout my pregnancy (I just gave birth in November of 09)  I have stopped taking it while I am breastfeeding. 

However I did have 4 miscarriages prior to my successful pregancy which my doctors found no known reason for.  I'm not saying it was related to the 6MP, but just food for though.

Hi everyone, thanks so much for your replies. It's so great to hear good stuff. I had a chat to the phamacist and he just said, to get better first, get on top of the Crohn's and then think about other stuff. I guess Iknew that already but just freaked out a bit at the last minute.

I realise now that as you say the doses we take aren't nearly at the stage that would cause these problems that we know of. But I spose it was just one of those things that I needed to hear someone tell me it would be ok. Probably sounds a bit silly.

I have a chat with both specialst at my next appointments.

Have started the 6mp today and so far so good. Lets hope it continues.
