Years of Diarrhea and now suddenly Constipated??

So for the last six years I've had diarrhea, usually very watery and sometimes explosive.  Had resection surgery in January 08 and now in the last week I've suddenly become miserably constipated.  I feel like I need to go and nothing comes out. I feel all bloated for about a day and a half and then finally I go.   This has happened twice this week and after I've finally been able to go I go back to diarrhea. When I was able to go it was just mushy soft not like I would expect if I was truely constipated.  What could be going on?  Do you think I'm having stricture issues again?  I'm taking entocort and pentasa presently.

I have had the same and can relate to your issues. I was never constipated,always diarrhoea up until about a month ago. I went to the doctors because I was getting constipated and was getting bad pains and my stomach was definitely not right. She did blood tests and as suspected they all came back very abnormal with raised blood cell count and all the inflammation markers were high. She confirmed that I was having a flare, which I am still having at the moment, just can't seem to get into remission, after the first lot of prednisone and not succeeding, I went back to her and she took more blood tests and they confirmed the same, still flaring, so here I am on my second lot of prednisone.
Maybe you should go and see your GI or doctor as maybe you are having a flare, also they do say that if your 'habits' change you should consult your doctor.

Something similar is happening to me. I went 5 years having constant explosive diarrhoea with alot of blood. I suffered for 5 years with my specialist telling me nothing is wrong. I found a new specialist in December and by January he found Crohns in my colon and small bowel. Days after being diagnosed I started to feel constipated and bloated. I still go to the toilet about 3 times a day but everything is solid and doesnt really want to come out. Im not on any medication for the Crohns until I see my specialist again 1st week in March. I just cannot understand how i have suffered this long and then all of a sudden its the exact opposite confused confused confused

I vary between diarrhea and constipation. When things get really hard, or I get too bloated, my dr always tells me to take miralax. It helps move things along a lot easier.

I honestly don't know but would suspect some possible inflammation (because of a flare?)

I too had diarreah for years. Explosive. For a year and a half now, though,  I have constipation. I have the urgency to go, but it won't or can't come out. It is painful. I also have had an MRI, CT Scan, and colonoscopy that show narrowing and a small benign mass but 'not enough to cause issues' according to my doctors. My GI just told me there is nothing blocking me up. I asked her why do my stools come out looking like a ribbon or pencil thin? She said mild narrowing, which I have, would not cause that. I take Mirilax everyday and still have these issues.  Now I am getting abscesses, but they are not caused by fistulas they said. The GI told me they are superficial abscesses, although quite big, but not abscesses. No one seems to be able to explain all of this to me. No one knows why I am constipated. I feel your pain. I actually miss my diarreah

I can relate to missing the diarrhoea , its strange how we get so you used to it, complain about it when we have it and then complain about it wehn we don't have it! lol I think I would rather have the big D atm instead of being unsure of whether or not I am actually going to go to the loo or not.And quite frankly my butt is sorer with the constipation than it was with the big D. Atleast I got some relief with sitz baths or a good soak when I had a lot of diarrhoea, but I dont seem to get the relief with the constipation for some reason.

I am borderline miserable right now, did not have a BM yesterday at all and very very little today. So basically two days of nothing after going many times diarrhea every day is my norm. I guess I'm gonna have to call the GI doctor and see what's going on. Is it safe to do stool softners?

I dont know about the stool softeners if you usually have diarrhoea, I have never had to use them as I have had diarrhoea for the past 3 years and this is the first time of being constipated, but I am still having diarrhoea at intervals too, so dont want to make that worse!
I would ask your doctor about it.

i have went threw that its amazing the way it happens i was told take fibergel and drink loads of water and it has helped me so hope it has been some help
