Osteoarthritis and Crohn's

Well, yesterday I received the results of my MRI. I have been having right hip pain since June last year and finally the MRI appointment came around! I have been diagnosed with "significant moderate arthritis of the right hip joint with joint effusion" and "significant subchondral bone edema and cyst formation in the acetabulum" which I think mean the same thing!

Anyway, I went on the osteoarthritis forum and so many people have CD or UC as well. I was wondering whether anyone here has information on how/if there is a connection. Also, what pain killers do other people use given we cannot use anti-inflammatories like Advil?

I have to admit that I am feeling pretty depressed about this. I was really hoping for a diagnosis of something fixable. The doctor told me to take Advil, glucosamine, MSM and chondroitin. Have these (not the Advil?) been effective for anyone here?

I'm having some hip pain, too. I can't take Advil or any kind of NSAID without activating the "Crohn's Launch System" in a major way - they have flared me too many times in the past to even consider it.

I don't have a diagnosis at this point because this is only the second time I've had this sort of pain - the first time I managed not to tweak it too much by not sleeping on my left side (which I hate) and it eventually calmed down. But this time around, it's back with a vengeance and it's higher intensity level leads me to think I will not get off so easy this time. Sigh.

It's not unbearable at this point, but majorly irritating and uncomfortable. I use Voltaren Gel for other local aches and pains when they inevitably happen (knee, etc.) but it's no good on the hip. Anyone have any suggestions?

The NYTimes has a story today about "salasate" (an older NSAID that I've never heard of before) that's apparently helpful with controlling blood sugar in diabetics. It mentions that it is thought to be gentler on the digestive track than aspirin. Anyone tried it?

I agree, don't take the Advil! You could ask for a prescription for Ultracet (Tramadol). I have taken it for back pain/hip pain.
