trying to get pregnant while on humira PLZ HELP

hi guys.

my names ebru im 21 and ive had crohns since i was 16.

thru the years ive had on one operation and removed part of my bowels (30cm) had fistulas and never found a medication thats worked untill humira. ive always produced antibodies against all my medicines.

me and my husband have been trying to get pregnant for a few months now and i feel like its not going anywhere. im a very small build only weighing 43kgs but doctors say my weight is ok for my height but not the best.

i just want to know has anybody fell pregnant while on humira and did it take a while or is it something else.

please help guys :(

hiya,

i was just wondering if you have discussed trying for a baby with your GI? Only reason i ask is i'm about to start humira and was told under no uncertain terms that pregnancy was a huge no no when on humira. I think that there have been no studies on the effects of humira on a feotus, could be wrong though!

Hi Ebru - I have had Crohn's for 8 years and was blessed to have 2 pregnancies; my boys are 6 and 5. Since then, I had an obstruction, which required surgery and ended in a bowel resection to remove the diseased part of the colon. We've been trying unsuccessfully for 3 years to have another baby. My doctor tells me there is just too much scar tissue from the obstruction/surgery. I'm curious to follow this thread though b/c I'm due to start Humira (I was on Remicade for 5 years but recently built up antibodies to it) and am hesitating because I'm hoping by a miracle that I will get pregnant and am uncertain of the effects it could have. An embryofetal perinatal developmental toxicity study has been performed in cynomolgus monkeys at doses of up to 100 mg/kg (266 times the human area under the curve [AUC] when given adalimumab 40 mg subcutaneously with methotrexate every week, or 373 times the human AUC when given adalimumab 40 mg subcutaneously without methotrexate) and has revealed no evidence of harm to the fetuses caused by adalimumab.

There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. It is not known if adalimumab crosses the human placenta. The molecular weight is very high (about 148,000), but immunoglobulin G has been shown to cross the placenta late in pregnancy. Because animal reproduction and developmental studies are not always predictive of human response, use adalimumab during pregnancy only if clearly needed.1 2

Pregnancy registry: To monitor outcomes of pregnant women exposed to adalimumab, a pregnancy registry has been established. Health care providers are encouraged to register patients by calling 1-877-311-8972.1

Lactation: It is not known whether adalimumab is excreted in human milk or absorbed systemically after ingestion. The molecular weight is very high (approximately 148,000), but immunoglobulins are excreted into breast milk. Thus, adalimumab might be excreted also, but the amount and the systemic bioavailability are unknown. Because many drugs and immunoglobulins are excreted in human milk and because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in breast-feeding infants from adalimumab, decide whether to discontinue breast-feeding or the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.1 2

hi,

have you tried to keep track of your basal body temperature to see if you ovulate?  It definitely clues you in as to how long your cycle is, and after a few months you start to see a pattern, and most people do not ovulate on day 14 of their cycle. It is extremely helpful. Additionally, if you have been trying for awhile....I was wondering if you ever tried those ovulation predictor kits? They basically show you your most fertile days.

I was already pregnant with my 3rd child when switched from remicade to humira, but I'm currently trying for baby #4 and I am still taking Humira. We haven't been trying for very long. I don't think the humira will be a problem for you.

Here's a theory that I have about Humira. It is only MY opinion and hasn't been proven scientifically. Humira has TNF-a blockers. TNF-a is what causes inflammation. Your body needs TNF-a to bring about ovulation. Since Humira has TNF-a blockers, I try not to take it if I know I'm going to ovulate in a few days. I take it WAY ahead of time OR just after ovulation. It's never prevented me from ovulating as far as I know, but just in case...

As far as your weight goes, I weighed the same as you when I got pregnant with my first child. Just make sure that you are not flaring right now and that you are stable as far as your illness goes. Sometimes it just takes time. I agree with Angievirsep93 that it would be a good idea to track your cycle. That way you are sure of when you are ovulating. Good luck! I hope you get good news soon!

girls i hope u fall pregnant soon, its such a struggle but i guess we gotta have faith.
i purchased a ovulation kit today so im gonna see how i go. keep me posted on how u girls go with ur quest :) god bless x0x0
