Hi there to all. I am new to this forum. A friend of mine who was diagnosed with Crohn's suggested that I check this site out for useful info from fellow diagnosed friends. I was diagnosed in 1996. I had 7 major surgeries (last one was in 2005 to reverse a temp ostomy) and praise God I am doing well and feeling better than I have in years. I currently take Entocort and have been doing well with that. Because I have been on it for 2 yrs., my doc seems to think that I should give it a rest and try some injection thing ~ one name starts with an "s" and the other one he mentioned would be Humira.  I told him that I would research and get back with him. My motto is though, if it's working, why change it?

Welcome aboard Kid,

I haven't had surgery for Crohn's yet and I hope it will be a long time in coming, if ever. Sorry you've had so many. If I do need one, hopefully you'll be around to give me some advise.

Hi, and welcome to healingwell, and I'm glad you found us. It's good to hear you're doing well with your crohn's after having such a rough road with 7 major surgeries. I think your doc wants to wean you off the Entocort because it is a steroid. Entocort is a type of steroid that is released into the intestine and is not as systemically absorbed as prednisone; however, this does not mean that it doesn't have the same side effects as prednisone with long term use - it also can cause some serious side effects like osteoporosis. I think your doc is right in trying to wean you off the entocort and on to something else that may work.

I think the drugs he mentioned are Cimzia and Humira. Remicade is another in the same category of drugs, and my husband is on it, they are anti-tnf agents. Remicade has worked really well for my husband so far - he's been on it for 2 years. They are not without risks, but when they work well, they can be a miracle.

Although PV does not have Crohns herself (hubby does) what she said was right on. The steroids can cause more problems down the road. Because of the steroid use over my 35 years with this disease I get to have another surgery myself, a total knee replacement this year, and the other probably the following year. I would give the other meds a shot, maybe that you start feeling even better, without doing the damage to your bones. During my 35 years with disease I have had 10-12 surgeries myself, a few for Crohns, and the rest because of the damage Crohns has added. Hugs!

just wondering.......what side effects are worse.....the side effects from Entocort or those from the anti-tnf drugs (Cimzia, Humira and Remicade)???
