Hi guys, I have had extreme itching in my anus for a few weeks. It's the type of itching that can keep you awake at night.
It can also be painful when I am passing stools.
What do you think this could be? I am terrified that it may be the start of a Perianal Fistula or something like that.
I am scared to go to my doctor about it at the moment. It's quite embarrassing.
I know it's silly to be embarrassed, like I have had loads of colonoscopies, so getting this examined should be a walk in the park.
I'm thinking this could be haemoroids, but I'm looking for symptoms of fistula. thanks!

Could it be small fissures? I know that when I have alot of D it irritates my bum and and stings sort of little scratches around it. I also have some skin tags... usually using some kind of soothing cream like anusol calms it down, and wiping with baby wipes or some other kind of wet wipe as opposed to dry, abrasive TP. I've never had a fistula *knock on wood* so I'm not sure what that starting up would feel like... either way, Feel better and good luck!

Hi thanks for that.. I have been using the wet wipes to keep myself clean as it's impossible with TP and it's too sore.
I will get the doctor to check it out, I am sure it's something like fissures and not the more serious thing.
I've never had any trouble in this area before. I'm on humira for 8 months now.
I have no issues in the bowel at the moment, it would be just typical for something else to kick off as soon as things have settled down internally.
Such is the nature of the beast!!

It could be, and these words were used by my dr., a "fanny fungus".  A while back after a bad bout of D and possibly a hemmy, I got very itchy there and it didn't go away.  Not to worry...a simple application of an ointment twice a day got rid of it quickly.

I would talk to your GI and have him look.  It could be nothing more than a rash.  Don't get worked up just yet.  Feel better.

I agree with the "fanny fungus" idea. What a nice happy way to describe it! It might take a creme or one pill of diflucan to get rid of it. In the meantime, avoid the extra irritation by not wiping -- use a hand-held shower sprayer instead. I do this because it is the only way I can get my setons clean, but I have noticed I have no irriation from wiping anymore. I just go in the toilet and then go to the tub. One foot inside and one outside, sit down on the side, and then spray it all away! It works really well. You might try a baby diaper rash ointment because it will sooth and protect the skin from yeast/fungus. It won't kill yeast once you have it, but it can help you from getting it, and it sure feels soothing!

I am laughing here to myself as I am also from Ireland and "fanny fungus" certainly does not refer to the butt area.  Hope you get sorted soon, even if it is a fungus smile

Do you have psoriasis? When psoriasis strikes sensitive areas it can be BEYOND itchy. Just another idea. Hope you figure out what it is SOON!

won't help the fungus itself but if you are up til 5am like me with extreme itch I take hydroxidine but you can take 2 benedryl and it'll do the same, help with the itch and get you some sleep.

I am having the same issue! Mine started as soon as I came home from my surgery. The itch is absolutely maddening - I honestly scratch with the TP until it burns. I can handle the burning more than the itching, but that can't be good for such a sensitive area.

I've been using preparation H, it has something in it that helps with itching and burning. It doesn't work immediately but eventually kicks in.

I see my GI tomorrow and am going to ask him for some relief.

I am an Irish American and I laughed too when I first heard "fanny fungus." You may need a prescription antifungal to get rid of it completely. Candida albicans is a real bugger to get rid of. I got it when I had fistula repair in 2005. I think the extra antibotics and the fact that the surgery itself upsets the proper balance of gut flora. Hope you don't let it go as long as I did.

how do you get tested for the yeast thing?  I also have that extreme itching down there..it'll drive you crazy.  I do have HUGE hemmies (I'm guessing that's what they are)it's SO DISGUSTING that I'm too embarrassed to even mention it to my dr.

Glad I'm not alone with this issue, it seems to be quite common!
The more I think about it the worse it gets.. I am definitely going to the doctor, but not today as it's my birthday and I can't think of a worse way to spend a bithday, LOL

I just get out in the yard and drag my butt around like my old mutt dog, eat a little grass and raise a leg on the rose bush. Now you know why dogs howl at the moon. Sorry Colly_, I know it's not funny but when it happens to me thats what I think of doing. Instead I put a little medicated ointment on and that usually does the trick. JavaJay, fanny is another word for rear, butt, behind, or buttocks. I'm sure you guys have others like the Brits with Bum .

I know fanny is a butt....hence the fanny fungus.  I think in Ireland, fanny means something else though.

This all got me thinking...and I remembered an old South Park episode where a gerbal got stuck into Mr. Slave. (Only SP fans will know what I am talking about probably).  Needless to say, I was thinking how the scratching would feel so good on all that itchness. devil

Hi, HA HA HA!!Here in the UK fanny fungus would mean ladies bits with thrush! (fungal infection) Anyways to help with your question could you not try an antihistamin and see if that works or an anti funga cream for that area Bev xl

Last summer I had itching down there with splits and cracks too. My nurse practitioner gave me something for yeast and it did nothing. I thought perhaps I was allergic to the baby wipes I was using. Finally, it got better when I used cortifoam enema. Be brave and check with your doc. They see it all.... I hope you get some relief soon.

Usually when that sort of thing happens to me, it turns out to be the hemmoroids... Itchy and painful... Preparation H or something similar usually helps me...

When I had this I used the benedryl cream, even going so far to put some UP inside as it itched up there also...

I'm not sure what caused it, but that really helped me. Also, I got some Calmoseptine that others on here have spoke of and that seemed to help too. That cooling sensation really helped.

When I first read this post, I googled "fanny" and "ireland". That helped me figure out what they were talking about! tongue
