I had a UTI a few weeks ago. Blood in my urine was the only symptom. Urinalysis showed protein and bilirubin, and I took a course of antibiotics. The blood seemed to get worse, and was accompanied by right-sided back pain and pain on urination. After a second course of antibiotics, I noticed a few times when my urine was completely opaque, with the consistency of paint. Subsequent urinalyses were normal.

I had a brief respite in symptoms while Aunt Flo visited (or at least, I couldn't tell if I still had blood in my urine), but this morning, I felt really strange when I woke up. Something just felt off. After a shower, my back started hurting again, so badly I could hardly move. I was nauseated (I've been on Reglan for gastroparesis for the past few weeks, which has done the job for my continual nausea, so it was a surprise to have the nausea come back) and felt, overall, just pretty darn crappy.

The pain is still in my back, mostly on the right side, and has radiated to my abdomen. I noticed tonight that there's also a rash that goes from the right side of my back down to the front -- it follows the pain trail almost exactly.

I'm really confused, and I'm not sure what's going on. I have an appointment with my internist's PA tomorrow, but as this has been going on for quite some time, and there haven't been any answers, I'm not sure what she'll be able to do for me.

Has this happened to anyone else? What causes it?

Good thing you have an appointment in the morning. What you describe could be one or two different things or a combo of the two. The blood in your urine accompanied by back flank pain sounds very symptomatic of a kidney stone. The type of pain caused by kidney stones can cause nausea and vomiting also.

The rash you are describing sounds much like shingles. Is the rash composed of little tiny blisters resembling chicken pox? Have you had chicken pox? Shingles follows the root nerves and often goes from back to front along the nerve path. A shingles outbreak can be very painful.

If it is a shingles outbreak, the doctor can give you antiviral meds to lessen the outbreak and lessen the course of the outbreak. It is important to get this evaluated quickly. If it is shingles, getting on antivirals quickly is very helpful.

If you don't have shingles, make them test for a kidney stone. Let us know what the PA says.

She said my symptoms sound exactly like a kidney stone, but the CT scan I had a few weeks ago when this started was clean. Urinalysis showed protein again, so she checked my kidney function, and it came up fine. I have an appointment with a urologist next week to see if there's anything they can see physically that might be causing my problems. I guess we'll see.
