Last week had really bad stomach pain right in the middle of my belly that radiated to my back. I thought,  Here I go again... kidney stone! Drove myself to the E.R.!!! Pain was at an 8 and just wouldn't go down. I've had 4 kidney stones before so I thought that's what it was.  The E.R. Doctor said, Oh it's not a kidney stone and wanted to know why "if it's a Crohns flair" I don't keep strong med's at home for pain to get me through times like this!!!

I was so upset! crying made the pain worse.  I don't have strong drugs at home because my G.I. doctor doesn't just prescribe them for no reason. Finally the E.R. Dr. said he was gonna leave it up to me whether to stay at the hospital or not (while he looked at his watch a 100 times) He really thought I should go home with pain med's and make an appointment with Dr......and I was thinking..Yeah, if there's an opening in the next week I'll be lucky and which Dr.? I have six!!!!!! the E.R. Dr. never came back into my room.

Anyway, I ended up staying at the hospital. The next morning early my G.I. was at the end of my bed consulting me. I was sooooooo glad I stayed. Pain just hung at 8 for four days while they tested and tested me. They did a colon/endoscopy...clean out was horrible. I never would have made it at home. Finally they found 2 hernia's  through a barrium CT.  The hernia surgery that I had two years ago....(with pig skin vs. mesh)  broke down completley. It wasn't strong enough.  My Intestine in two different spots was getting caught in the layers of stomach linning and creating a TOTAL blockage on and off. Well, I totally felt it!!!..ever since Christmas I'd been noticing something going on.!!!! Had surgery on Good Friday...I'm very thankful that my G.I. Dr. kept searching for the problem until he found it. This really was Crohns related at all.  So hard to know with Crohns though. Anything in the stomach we relate to it.

So back home today after 7 days at the hospital. Glad to be in my own bed!

Oh gosh! What an ordeal! I am so glad it was fixable though. I'm glad it wasn't kidney stones, or a crohn's flare, and that hopefully this surgery will mean the mesh will hold everything appropriately.

I am glad you're home! Now, you just have to get better and recover fully from this terrible terrible ordeal. It is so darn hard with crohn's to know what the heck is wrong - you always think it's crohn's, but this just goes to show, that there could be other causes. Every time my husband has something wrong, I suspect the crohn's, but I know I need to give the other possibilities a thought too.

You made a really good call to stay in the hospital rather than go home. I can't believe the ER doc just wanted to send you home with pain meds . . . we really do have to be our own advocates, because sometimes we get pretty crappy advice from physicians. :-) But I hope this is a story of all's well that ends well.

Thanks PV! Yes, we do get crappy medical advice sometimes and have to be our own advocates!
So important and yet scarey because there are times you can't speak for yourself.

this really WASN'T Crohns related at all.

Glad they found the trouble but sorry you had to have surgery. Hope all goes well from here on out and you heal well.

I too am glad they figured out what was going on and got you fixed up. Hope you start feeling much better soon. Hugs!

Ok this post regarding the treatment from the ER doc, just ticks me off. I would have to talk with this doctor. Mistakes in diagnoses happen but just that attitude is so wrong! I worked in ER and they are uder pressure from the hospital to get the pt's out of there ASAP & this is just one factor that contributes to this attitude. But me personally, I would have just had to take a little stroll down to the ER and have a face to face conversation with that doc....tactfully, but I probably would have. Just me tho. Feedback to the hospital via phone call/letter is good tho.

Glad you stayed and are doing better, continue healing well.

After being home for a few days ....the ER Dr. thing is just really making me more and more angry. I know they are sapossed to get you in and get you out..but I seriously was in so much pain. Weird now how the back and pelvic pain is gone. I think I was suffering alot long than I knew. I do need to address that ER Dr. thing. for sure!

Another thought I've been having is...
So....I had the hernia due to (a pig skin) breaking down from previous hernia surgery. The general surgeon told me it was the "cadillac" of the meshes back a few years ago..but more and more of the (pig skins) have FAILED!....and they have had to replace them.
Do you think I'd get a call or something saying..umm....you had one of these meshes and welll.....they break? a RE-CALL of sorts?
Kinda like a car that has a re-call? Accept this is my freakin' body. And..I get to pay for the surgery all over again. I don't mean to ungrateful for really awesome care and quick care here in America...but it just seems odd that when the medical field knows they have a "recall".....

I NEVER GOT the call...just saying:)

Good for you making the right decision regardless of the pressure from the ER Dr. Glad to hear your problem was fixed and you back home!
