My aversions to dairy developed long before I was diagnosed with Crohn's, so I have just always assumed I was lactose intolerant.

But now, I'm starting to wonder... could the Crohn's cause lactose intolerance, or, is it not lactose intolerance at all, and I have had Crohn's a lot longer than I though?

Thoughts?

I don't have issues with dairy but from what I have read and what my doctor has told me many people do have issues with dairy when they have crohns. Since they don't always go hand in hand you may never know if you really had crohns a lot longer. I talked to my doctor about nutrition and probiotics. He told me that this disease is so varied from person to person in what they can tolerate he does not rule out specific foods. He told me I should keep a food diary and notate sysmptoms throughout the day. I know many people also have a gluten sensitivity with this and there again I can tolerate bread just fine as long as it is not whole wheat. Which is sad because I actually prefer the wheat to the white.

I use to love my hot milk with cinnammon on it to calm me down n help sleep
has natural ingredient when heated is activated
as the yrs went on i started to have problems when i drank it
i cannot drink milk at all now due to my cd
i believe as other poster some hv issues others dont

It is a shame because I love milk, cheese, ice cream, etc. I have started eating soy products, which aren't too bad. Or if I realllly want something cheesy, I'll eat it, but I have lactose digestive pills I take. They seem to help a little.

I haven't noticed any problems with gluten, which is a good thing because I love breads, pastas, etc.

What I do, is normally eat dairy before I go to bed and it won't bother me while I sleep. It normally takes a good 2 hours or so for me to start getting bloated after I eat dairy... Just very gassy and crampy. I'm okay with cheese and don't drink regular milk. I drink Lactaid as I find it's the closest thing to real milk that I can find. (I love my milk) The thing that bothers me more than anything is whipped cream/cool whip. I had a starbucks iced coffee and they put cream on top... By the time I got home I was ready to explode lol.

I highly recommend Lactaid if you like milk.

I became lactose intolerant after my resections. I can have some ice cream and some cheese, but I don't even tolerate the lactaid now. Oh well!

I seem to be mildly lactose intolerant. I do fine with yogurt and some cheese, but I have to be careful with milk, ice cream or lots of cheese at once...like no Chicago thick crust pizza...Uno's used to be my favorite! It does seem to have started at the same time as the Crohn's diagnosis, but I don't know for sure. Gluten doesn't bother me at all.

I never have been much of a milk drinker. But I do use Lactaid (or the store brand... Kroger has a pretty good one) with cereal, or for cooking. It's pretty good, a little runny though.

I have to be very careful when I eat pizza, and load up on my lactose pills!
Things like ranch dressing, or really creamy things seem to bother me the worse.

I always get my Starbucks with soy milk and no whip. I don't think I could live without Starbucks ;)

i was told by my first doc that like 99% of crohn's patients become lactose intolerant. i had no problem with dairy until a few months after i was diagnosed and began taking a ton of meds. what really made me mad was that i had to figure this out on my own over a few months (and plenty of accidents). i asked what he thought of this and he told me what i said above. thanks for nothing doc. thanks for the heads up. it sill makes me mad at him when this topic gets brought up. how lazy of a doctor are you not to share info like that with a new patient, and i was a teenager at the time! just what other info do you know about the disease that you are keeping from me for no reason at all? that is my rant for today. thanks for letting me vent.

I know when I was first diagnosed nearly 35 years ago, I was told to avoid anything with milk or milk products in it. I ate a diet that elimated all products that had milk or lactose in it. I loved milk back then and it was extremely difficult for me to avoid it. After that flare had healed I went back to milk products without any problems. But as I said after my resections, milk was no longer and option for me.

When I first went to my mothers doctor to ask if I might have CD like she did. He told me I was only lactose intolerant and to stop drinking milk. I was 13 at the time and I would come home from school and have a huge glass of milk and an apple every day, by dinner I would be on the couch in pain. I stopped drinking the milk and probably the apple too since it was part of the whole snack process and was better for a while. I managed for a while and forgot about things. When things really got bad again I just assumed it was something else since I had already been told it wasn't CD. I guess my point is that the doctors really don't know all that much and we have to keep pushing. Yes I am lactose intolerant, but I also have CD and maybe some testing should have been done instead of just blowing me off because I was just a kid.

I have mild reactions to milk but i have huge reactions to gluten. My sister and aunt have celiacs disease which seems a bit of a coincidence but i tested negative, despite this i get far more severe reactions than my sis. confused

I had no problems with Dairy until i started taking Imuran (on 225mg/day), now i am super sensitive to milk (only takes about 5 mins until i feel the internal organs start to rumble) but cheese still doesnt bother me.

My mother told me I quit taking milk as a baby!!! I've always had an aversion to milk itself but loved ice cream and cheese. Now, I can't eat ice cream because it will give me bad cramps and diarrhea. I can eat cheddar cheese and some others. I take probiotics too. Sometimes I get a craving for ice cream and eat it anyway. Sometimes it bothers me and other times I am ok with it. Go figure.

        I agree with this.

        Before I had Crohn's, I could eat pizza and drink milk without any problem at all.  Now I am extremely sensitive to milk and milk products.  Even a tiny trace of milk and lactose can trigger an attack (diarrhea).  Now whenever my company has a pizza party, I just escape to somewhere else.

I am lactose intolerant. I started making SCD yogurt. As this cooks for 24 hours it has no lactose. I am putting it on everything. In the morning with some fruit. In the evening as a dipping sauce when I add herbs and spices and for dessert all kinds of great stuff. This totally satisfies my "milk" craving. Also, there was a post that said that Lactose was not good for you. I am sorry I forget but I believe it was to do with vit D. I gave up lactose when I read it.

I read a book about intestinal problems and such once... It detailed some stuff about Crohn's disease...

It said that Crohn's disease people are more likely to develop lactose intolerance because of the damage that's done to the lining in their small intestines.... Because that's where lactase, the enzyme that breaks down lactose, is produced....
