Accutane Caused Crohn's and UC Commercial

So apparently some hot shot law company has a commercial that is asking people if they have ever taken Accutane and also have Crohns or UC.

I took an acne drug that I put on my face called Retin A, but I don't know if that is accutane.

Anybody else buying this BS?

What next, people?

I got a zit a month growing up, and have friends who used accutane -- I got the Crohn's... sigh.

There was a thread about this same topic at the beginning of the week.

I did use acutane and I did get Crohn's. Acutane has been said to cause a lot of problems after use. Retin-A is different, but I'm sure they've tried to connect things to this drug too!
I've met with many specialists who say that there is no concrete proof of this. The lawsuits will take years if they even go to court and the settlements will most likely be very small. You also have to surrender all of your medical records to the attorneys, which I would not feel comfortable with at all.

...and a few months ago, and maybe a year ago too...memory fails...however, just to note, I was one of the lucky to never really ever have acne, nary a zit beyond 13 years old...but not only do I have Crohn's but I have PSC (Primary Sclerosing Colangitis) to boot...yeah, gypsy, I think its a load of bunk...JMHO...

Over the years I have read this forum, I have just about seen everything linked to it. From farm chemicals to microwaves to Pepsi clear (you remember Pepsi clear right lol?) Maybe someday one of them will be able to dig up their thread and say I TOLD YOU SO. lol. Maybe we should start a pool and take bets...

I took Accutane for about 5 months when I was 19 and was diagnosed with UC when I was 20 or 21....not joining the lawsuit though because I feel like I would've taken it knowing the risk.

A week or two ago I posted a link to a recent study that found those that took accutane had a higher risk of developing ulcerative colitis. There was no significant increase in developing Crohn's disease in this study.

Accutane is a wicked serious drug to be on, so it wouldn't surprise me for it to be implicated in other ailments.  My friend's brother was on it for awhile as a teenager, and we were reading the warning labels and it was really scary.  I know all drugs can be scary if you take the time to read the info, but this was far above and beyond the normal side-effect type stuff.  I know he had to get his liver tested every so often, and women who take it have to be on hormonal birth control b/c of the risk of severe birth defects.  Much different than Retin-A.

Never took it, had first Crohns symptoms at age 19, probably before this drug was even developed. Lawyers would sue the sun for skin cancer if they could figure a way to get a process server up there . . .

It's actually not BS...quite a few yrs ago already, it was noted that taking Accutane could cause UC-like symptoms (bring UC on as in a trigger for UC)...haven't heard of it being related to Crohn's though....in the pamplet that Accutane comes with, it's listed right in it that it may cause UC-like symptoms.

How come when I asked this, almost everyone ignored the post?
Oh well, my IBD started before this drug was in wide usage. No settlement for me, alas.

My son was diagnosed with CD at 18..He took Acutane at 16.  We have a family history of IBD"S..His colon is also backward in his body along with CD. The acutane did get rid of a very bad case of nodular acne which with his red hair would have caused severe permanent scaring if left untreated.  The acne affected his self-esteem as well. Maybe it just screws with your immune system if already prone to it?

Hello All,

I don't normally post on here. But I was on acctane when I was 16 years old for maybe six months. When I was about 17 I started taking notice of symptoms, and in March 2010 (19 years old) I was diagnosed with IBD. My gastro can not distinguise if I have Crohns Colitis or UC. My mom has Crohns as well, and I definatly would have suffered through the acne if I knew it might have triggered IBD. So maybe it could have triggered it, but nobody will ever know right!

high amount of commercials on this product right now....
Pssh, I wish someone would have a go at 6mp, remicade and humira, ah but, I guess I knew the risks....

Unless a researcher comes up with irrifutable proof that there was cause and affect I don't see how anyone proves a link. The lawyers who put this commercials out there are the equivalent of ambulance chasers in my opinion. There's a class-action lawsuit in the works for almost every drug - have you noticed that? I say forget it - we have enough stress in our lives - can imagine how much more we'd have if we got involved in one of these lawsuits?

they're also saying can cause aspergerhers, we have afriend who son took accutane and then developed aspergerhers.

My thought about those commercials is this...........it's probably true.  The more people those firms get in the lawsuit the bigger THEIR payout.  I would talk to my own lawyer first before getting on board with these guys because it could have such a limiting factor on the payout.

While I firmly agree that people with IBD need to be on meds for the disease, I do think we throw systemic drugs at people too quickly in this society. Accutane does not have a good safety profile. If I were a dermatologist, I'd try everything in the book besides that drug to get people well. It is known to cause horrible birth defects, even after you are off the drug for a while. I think they recommend to be off it for over a year before you try to get pregnant, so it is a tough drug.

My money is on genetic predisposition triggered by exposure to some normally benign chemical found in deodorant.

I have never taken accutane so I have no idea what the effects of it may be. The thing that bothers me about this commercial is that when they list the diseases its listed like: crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, inflammatory bowel disease. Ok unless I'm somewhere really out of the loop I thought inflammatory bowel disease was what crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis were when they are combined together. Am I wrong? It's like they're listing 3 different diseases on the commercial when both of the diseases combine to make the inflammatory bowel disease.

I apologize if I'm wrong in thinking this, but that commercial drives me nuts!

Well it is interesting to read some of your feedback. My parents are wanting me to look into this as well. I was also on Acutane in my teen years and there is NO history of Colitis or Crohn's disease in our family.

I think, from what I am hearing and reading from in the States based in Canada that this IS in fact worth looking into BUT only if you can PROVE that you were on the drug. So medical records are a must of course. And yes, I agree - pursuing this would cause unnecessary stress in my life at which point I have enough of (divorce). So I am on the fence with it too. And as we recall - my family - we were not told or nor did we sign any agreement based on the risks and side effects pertaining to the drug.

I am also not sure if my family doctor will be able to prove that I was on the med as that was more than 10 years ago.

I agree that many doctors just throw out meds like base balls and its crazy and scary!!!
I fear the worst with being on Remicade - as this "SUPER" drug also doesn't have a very "nice" looking side effects history either.
I am VERY scared as to how it will determine the health of my future - and sure I might be a bit better now, but what about 10 years from now? Am I going to have or get Lupus or some other kind of serious ailment because of being on Remicade? I guess that's the risk you take. :o/

Sharon, inflammatory bowel disease is the "umbrella" term for for a group of conditions: uc and crohn's. In other words, if you have Crohn's, then that is a form of IBD. So you can say you have Crohn's, the manifestation of IBD, or you can say you have IBD. Both are correct.

The only difference is that saying you have Crohn's is more precise than saying you have IBD.

      Well, I have read some recent books suggesting chemicals in the enviroment are the causes of all kinds of auto-immune mischief & disasters.

     So maybe it does make sense that it could trigger a Flare in someone.

  Like the one reply said though, even if the attorney's win the Class Action Lawsuit, the claimants aren't liable to get much in monetary rewards. The Lawyers however will be raking in the cash. Situation Normal...

I recognize the benefits of Accutane, but shouldn’t the drug company disclose ALL the risks to doctors and acne patients before use. I believe Roche didn’t want people to know that Accutane could lead to IBD or Crohn’s Disease because they wouldn’t make as much money. That’s not right or legal.
