Well my husbands niece was dx'd with CD a few years ago.  The family is a family that "enjoys" the medical conditions they have...you know why take an aspirin when you can take a vicodin types.  So everyone was all upset for her and they wanted her college to change the food offerings in the cafeteria just to meet her needs. And everyone should pay attention to her because "she's sick"

Well...lo and behold she is now "cured".  To quote my SIL "her doctor said if you have a mild case it can just go away".  I want this doc on every research team as he seems to have found the cure that none of the other docs can find let alone find a cause.

Ugh...I tried to make them understand that it does not go away, it goes into remission.  I even showed them my skin blotches that are a result of my CD-trying to show them the many sides of CD.  That was a waste of time.  Of course you know that this means that my symptoms are not real because the niece "does not have any symptoms"  Crohns is nothing, it just goes away.  Thank the heavens my husband knows better than to believe what they are saying.

Ha! @ a "mild case" just going away. Thank you for giving me my first laugh of the day.

So I take it that the niece isn't on any medication for Crohn's? Is she still following whichever diet she required the cafeteria to change its menu for? I worry a bit for her as you are quite right: the disease does not go away. Oh, dear god how it does not go away. In fact, without treatment it usually gets worse. It may take a matter of days, months, or years, depending on the rate of attack. But quite commonly it is years in fact as Crohn's can be a very slow developing disease.

To give my story briefly, when I was diagnosed 11 years ago my symptoms were so mild I didn't even really believe I had Crohn's. I thought that the diarrhoea would clear up at some point and that would be that: no more disease. I couldn't have got it more wrong if I'd tried. Nobody explained anything to me and reading the patient information leaflets didn't help me to grasp the chronic side of the disease. Chronic means the same thing as long-term. That's what your niece's family isn't seeing: they're only seeing the here and now and thinking that because your niece is okay now, she will always be okay. That really is very unlikely to be the case.

And that's why that doctor is so remiss. I do feel for the niece, as between her doctor and her family, she has almost no chance of taking her Crohn's seriously. I just hope that when the symptoms return (as they will, if it's Crohn's) they return in a mild and gradual form, giving her time to adapt and start treatment.

Uggghhh God how I hate hearing this stuff. There is always that person that says if you just eat this, or don't eat that, or take this supplement or that supplement and your Crohns will be cured.

I have a mild case of Crohns myself, but have had 2 resections and mutiple other surgeries because of the many ways Crohns affects your whole body. Only had 4 flares in my 35 years with this disease, but in many other ways I was always reminded of my Crohns. Let them go along in their ignorance, I know Crohns and this little girl is gonna have some surprises soon. As Crohns may be quiet for a little while, and if she is unmedicated, I can guarantee that it will return and return with an ugly vengence. It always does! And then my friend, you can gladly say to them all "I told you so!"

It's the girl who suffers, though, not the family...

Not really fair on her. She's young. She probably thinks she knows it all and that she's invincible. That's the way the young think. (Not every single one of them, but you get my drift.) And mild Crohn's is an "invisible" disease so to speak; that is, you look the same and nobody is gonna notice if you're going to the toilet a bit more often than normal or if you're passing liquid stools. I can forgive even the family for not taking it seriously; why should they have insight into a disease that takes sufferers years to learn about?

But still, they have been warned. Some people just like to lack common sense, I guess. As for that doctor, I do have words for him but I won't post them here.

PS: Oh, and where I ended up? Being told a month ago by my doctor that my Crohn's would "kill" me if I didn't take anything. That's where "mild" Crohn's got me a decade down the line and god only knows I did my best to ignore it for all of that time. That's probably why I ended up being told it would kill me.

I met a large number of my partners distant relatives. I had been ill and they were asking about it. Our conversation ended with them telling me about their dicky tummys and how they might have crohns. I am thinking huh. You havent got a clue

I only wish I had listened...I also thought my dx was wrong after I went into remission...I stopped all my meds...if I had kept up my maintenance meds throughout, I do not think I would have as severe a case as I do now...

Idiots, try learning something, instead of consulting a paragraph in some ( Out of date likely!) textbook.

My poop was solid today, and I haven't felt any pain. I am cured. You guys don't have Crohn's because all you need to do is poop solid poop and it's cured. Wimps.

Also, my poop is made of rainbows and theres a leprechaun living in my colon. He gives me gold.

I just skimmed thru this thread but... VICODIN CURES CROHNS???? Oh man that's fantastic!! I'll be sure to ask my gastro for a script next time I see him!

I have a relative that's really distrustful of doctors and was disappointed in me when I "gave up" and went to a gastro clinic after trying to get over my first flare by modifying my diet for a few weeks. Since then I've heard all sorts of stuff, which I bounce off my gastro...

none of my family get ..it..at all and 2 of them are nurses
i feel sorry for the young girl as well

GDen...no they are not saying that. I just used that as an example to describe the family's thoughts on medicine. They love the attention and have taken so many aspirin that now they "have" to take vicodin because why take a little pill when you collect up everyone else's Rx meds to use. Hmm wonder why the one kid is in rehab for Rx med addiction hmmm. I have picked my MIL up from the hospital because she had an attack...reality is she felt she was being ignored and this was her way of getting attention.

My guess...CD did not give the niece enough attention for the mom to think it was a big deal. And this niece is the one everyone ignores so she shouldn;t have it anyway. I just hate that a doctor said it "can go away". i have a "mild" case....limited flares, mostly sypmtoms due to one major surgery....but I know what happens when i don't take my maintenance meds.

urgh....in laws are bad, but docs that feed into their delusions is worse
