Weird things with Imuran??

I have to ask...I have been on Imuran for two days now, I am due to move the dose up tonight but I have to tell you really weird things are happening. I take Prednisone in the morning, and Imuran at night. For part of the night I wake up wanting to vomit and the other parts of the night I start hallucinating , I have done it both nights I took it...I am not falling asleep all the way and I keep seeing things that aren't there. Its enough to wake me up and scream because of what I see. I am driving my hubby nuts and he is wondering what is going on. For the rest of the day, I feel awful, very run down and cranky more than likely because of the lack of sleep. I am nervous to start the higher dose.

Its a weekend.. of course, so no dr until monday. So basically my question is this, has anyone ever heard of this? Is this something that will just go away once I am used to the meds?

I've never heard of imuran causing hallucinations. Did you check with your pharmacist? Can you reach your doctor thru his/her answering service? How much Imuran are you taking? I wouldn't take the Imuran tonight if you can't reach your doctor. It takes a few months to take effect, so skipping a couple of nights after being on it only two days isn't going to make a big difference in the long term.

I had hallucinations at night when I was on Prednisone. How much are you taking?

This is my fourth course of prednisone since April.. this time it is only 30 mg..I am not sure what is going on. Maybe hallucinations is the wrong word.. my son is sitting here correcting me =)

all I know is that I started taking the prednisone 3 nights ago, and the imuran two nights ago..and before that I was sleeping great. Now I am waking up wanting to vomit, and seeing things in the room that aren't there... seeing things coming at me.. its crazy...ugggg...and the worst part is that I am still having diarrhea...the colestipol is not working. told the dr this on friday and he said to take it every day....patience.. I know.

Hi there,

Nausea is a well documented side affect of this drug and I think it is why many people take if at night as opposed to the morning(so that hopefully they sleep through it) I haven't heard of it being a side affect for hallucinations though.

On a secondary level I would like to thank you for bringing this up-obviously most online sites have info re side affects(as in standard knowledge of side effects) but I have just come across one re coughing and this drug. DS has had a cough for 7 weeks now(nothing major but coughing everyday) and this is a side effect that his Gp needs to be notifed about!! Fortunately I had already made an appt for him next week but I was stil in two minds as to whether he really needed to go(My mind has def been made up now)

Nausea is very common side effect for it. My bottle says to take it with food to try and avoid that.

As far as the nighttime hallucinations... I get them all the time, but from Benadryl! There are other drugs that I take that have it listed as a possible side effect (though not Imuran, that I am aware of) but when I take Benadryl without fail I have a hard night.

What kinds of things are coming at you??? I'm glad you posted this, too. I just got back from my GI yesterday and he prescribed Prednisone & Imuran. I'm supposed to take one, 50mg Imuran per day for a week and then up the dose to 100mg per day after the first week.

I don't start this new round of treatment until AFTER I get back from Orlando next week. But now I'm getting a little anxious. The only "major" side affects he told me to be aware of and to let him know about were abdominal pain, nausea and/or vomiting - which, of course, I already have regularly so I don't know how I'll know if it's the Crohn's or the Imuran!

Thanks all of you ..I don't know if its the imuran or the prednisone or if I have gone over the edge =) its so hard to tell. I know I was sleeping fine before starting and now its happening..

I am embarrassed to say.. but I was seeing large animals coming at me, or bugs filling my bed..crazy stuff like that.. I must sound like a nut. I was on 50 mg for two days and I am supposed to up it tonight to 125mg..heaven only knows what will happen.. called the pharmacy and you are right , its not listed but I have had effects from meds that aren't listed so those don't mean much to me.

day by day.. but it does help to come here with you guys.. thank you so much...

Interesting and freaky. I started 125mg Imuran about 3 nights ago (seems we are all starting it together), and I haven't noticed anything at all.

Maybe it is the prednisone.. I guess I didn't go there because I have been on it so much and never noticed any effects..but maybe it finally has hit me the right way????

Sometimes the side-effects don't appear until you've been on the drug for quite a while. I just read that 'feel like throwing up' is yet another prednisone side effect, that does seem to fit what you're experiencing. Is there someone to call (doctor answering service/pharmacy/emergency number) to find out how serious this is? They might want you to stop taking it right away.

Good luck getting it figured out, your hallucinations sound very scary.

I bet it's the Pred. I became a different person on that drug - really severe anxiety issues.

When I hallucinate, I see things crawling on the bedroom walls/ceiling like snakes. And, often, my dogs getting stuck in the ceiling fan. DH has pulled me back onto the bed more times than I'd like to admit just as I was reaching into the (set on high) ceiling fan in attempt to save a dog.

It's crazy, and scary, and I know it can affect your life after nights on end like that. Any hope you can taper off the Pred soon?

he just started me on the pred.. wants me to take it for three months until the imuran starts working.... I am having severe joint pain which is why the Prednisone has made a return appearance.

but thank you for sharing your hallucination story.. I was slightly freaked out that I was alone.. so thank you.

Yeah, I think its the Pred, not the Imuran. I have never heard of that being a side effect of Imuran. The nausea is Imuran for sure, and I would try to take it with your dinner and that should help ease the nausea. Good luck!

last night I just had one hallucination, I was really knocked out after taking the higher dose of imuran.. still feel wiped. my stomach hurts really bad today and having bad diarrhea..

i didn't know that prednisone could affect you after the fact... I would have thought the other courses would have shown hallucinations.. it did give me moodiness and hyperactivity.. but not hallucinations.. its weird that starting this course of prednisone is possibly giving me hallucinations..

but i am thankful that it wasn't so bad last night.. just one hallucination I can handle..

If the nausea keeps up you can ask for some anti-nausea med. Also if the hallucinations keep up you might want to try a mild anti anxiety drug at bedtime. It would help you to sleep and might just be enough to get you into a deeper sleep level. Remember, our bodies do their best healing while we are sleeping, if you aren't getting a good nights sleep, you aren't doing yourself any good. Being a trooper in this instance isn't the best idea.
