The worst colonoscopy story ever?

My dad told me this last night - it happened to his friend.

I swear, it's true!

His friend spent the day drinking his prep and all night on the pot.  While he was getting ready to go the procedure, he found himself on the toilet again, reading the small print on the instruction sheet to pass the time.

His appointment was not until the next week.

And no, they couldn't reschedule.

What a cold, hard-hearted gastro this poor man had. You'd think the jerk gastro could have stayed over a 1/2 hour at the end of the day to save the poor man another prep.

I'd find another gastro!!!!

In my worst of flares, I used to do the preps just to clean myself out if I had an important function later the next day (like a wedding ect) desperate times call for desperate measures...I didn't do it often but I've done it on a few occassions...just as bad as prepping and not getting scoped afterall.

PB4 I am amazed that you do a prep so you can do something the next day. I would be TOO SICK the next day to enjoy anything, the preps all make me really sick for days.

I feel so bad for that poor guy. They more than likely would not get a repeat from me though.

Am I the only one who doesn't mind doing a prep?? Lol, I feel soooo good afterwards having everything out of my body.

@MAG - I used to feel like you, but the last colonoscopy changed my mind on that. The prepping was gruelling, the colonoscopy horribly painful, and I went into flare-up mode (beyond my usual everyday symptoms, that is) shortly afterwards. The flare was short-lived (about a week), but unpleasant and debilitated me even further.

But in the past, I definitely liked the feeling of being cleaned out. And didn't mind doing the prep in order to achieve that feeling.

The last time I had a scope I ended up at the hospital 2 hours early because I fainted from dehydration. Then I had a flare. So no, I don't ever see myself using a "cleanse" as a way to feel better, LOL!

My dad told me this story and then giggled hysterically for many minutes. Evil laughter! His friend was doing a scope for the normal reasons - you know, it's been 10 years and it's time to take a look - not an IBD patient.

I did hear of an elderly man who did the complete bowel prep, only to have his scope cancelled on him. Twice.

C2, it might not be anything to do with the doctor. Depending on the hospital, the theatre space might have been allocated for other doctors and procedures, making it impossible for the doc to squeeze in another patient?

I agree - time for a new gastro.  In the middle of my last prep, I got a computerized call from my doctor's office, saying the appointment was the next (next) day.  I was 95% sure it was an error, and when I went to my appointment in the morning, I was right - I had the right day and the computerized message was wrong.  I asked what would have happened if I had prepped for the wrong day, and she told me that's happened before and they try to fit the person in somehow.

i get so dehydrated and tired- i almost passed out when they were trying to insert the IV- couldn't find a vein and all the poking nearly took me down...

Laying on your left side, just getting ready to prep you to go under and the nurse looks at you and says---- "YOU TAUGHT MY DAUGHTER IN 5th GRADE!" "Don't put her under... let me show her a picture of her NOW!" I about died.

Kim that is awful. I'm sure you really wanted to see the picture of your ex student at a time like that! lol. When I went for my 2nd one the nurse was going over all of the information and she goes your 22 so what year did you graduate high school. Oh do you know my son Stephen!?! Yes, I did know her son Stephen and had a huge crush on him since middle school. I almost about died that his mom was one of the nurses. I don't think I've ever been more embaressed. I just hope she didn't go home and tell Stephen that she saw one of his old class mates in the endoscopy dept at the hospital.

you just gotta laugh sometimes... I was so sick, but my last thought as I went under was, "wait until my co workers hear this..." And it did get quite a chuckle in the teacher lounge.

Heck, this last time, I was one of the latter patients to be processed, and had to go sit in the "waiting" room for the c-scope pts...you know so they can put in your IV's...and there was a room full of guys(yeah, I'm a chica)...and me in just a hospital gown...it's different with the different docs...but a room full of strangers? I'm not sure how the guys felt...smhair

Lordy, if it HAD been someone you had a crush on...can you say "awkward" (in a Jon Stewart voice) shocked

Becoming undone that would be pretty bad as well. As it is just waiting in the room to be called in. I've had 3 and I'm always the youngest there. I always get weird looks as I don't think most people realize you can have it done before the age of 50!!! Luckily haven't known anyone else only that one nurse.

Ivy6-LOL, That's a very good point. I'm not sure what I would have done if it was the boy instead of his mom. I probably would have passed out as soon as I saw him or ran out and never went back!

I learned during my second scope ever, I think second, that I have a DEADLY allergy to Valium....guessing you can imagine how that scope went...good thing I don't remember it, though apparently it's a good thing I even woke up at all, eep.

LOL, I felt the same way.

To be fair to the GI, even if the scope itself takes half an hour, the preparation for the staff takes much longer, including winding down for the day. It takes a lot of coordination between a large number of staff to do a scope, with an anesthesiology sometimes being needed.
