Humiliated...

People can be really rude and incondsiderate. I know i was before i was diagnosed with crohns. One thing to remember is these girls were drunk. That probably exacerbated their behaviour. I'm not saying forgive and forget but try to hold on to that. I have been in your shoes many times. The worse was when i was at uni. Think rich spoilt princesses and then add in loud noisy BM's!! They were not good times! Still one thing i used to notice was no matter what they did in the loo, they NEVER washed their hands! Bleurgh! Sorry i'm wandering off topic.

Huni, you need to remember that you are strong, you dont need to tackle them about it, cos in all likelyhood they still wouldnt get it especially if they were drunk. Hang on to the fact that your stronger than them.

Having a bathroom emergency is a fact of life whether an IBDer or not! Granted a little tougher in a public setting with an immature, drunk audience. You are head and shoulders above those girls in compassion. One of these days, if they haven't already, they will have their own bathroom emergency in one way shape or form and maybe they will think next time before laughing.

Had you been a Guy in a Men's Room it probably would not have happened even though Men like bathroom humor with the best of them.

One small thing to be grateful for is that you made it to the bathroom in time. Have read too many stories where some have not.

I am so sorry that happened to you, (((BIG HUGS))). I have had this darn disease for nearly 35 years and I still have a hard time going if there is another person in the bathroom.

After my recent kidney surgery I had explosive d alot. They had to put a portable potty next to my bed because sometimes I coulndn't make it all the way to the bathroom. A woman in the next bed had her husband visiting with her and one time I had to use the potty chair, as I couldn't wait. I passed alot of watery stool followed by alot gas. I just had to put my pride aside as there really nothing else I could do. I just politely apologized. But I was still embarrassed because later that evening I heard them asking to be moved. I wish people could understand that some folks are ill and have no control of their bowels. So sorry you had that experience.

*hugs* Everybody else had good words to say. I'm a 25 y/o girl and I just want to remind you that people laugh at embarrassing stuff like that all the time. If they knew you, they'd be laughing with you.

Yep, been there too. I didn't make it to the bathroom while at the mall with my daughter. Had to change... The younger (18?) girls were talking on and on about the smell and they were not even drunk, just rude and ignorant.

Another time I had really bad d, but tried to go for a run (I thought I was all emptied out and safe!). I had D running down my legs on a *busy* street. I found my way into a garbage dumpster gated space, used my socks to clean up then threw those away (obviously).

Then there was last week... Thankfully nobody was in the bathroom with me (at work) but I also know this is what prompted them to buy new scents for the ladies room! I didn't make it, had to throw away my underwear, got poop on the floor and all over the toilet. I found cleaner and cleaned it all up, went to my car and changed my clothes.

This is a horribly humiliating disease. No doubt about that! I just try to tell myself that nobody really has to know about these issues. The girls that laughed at me were people I don't know. Most of the time I can get away without others knowing I've had a "crohn's moment"... It's the lingering smell that is the worst of it. BTW - I went out and got a small, travel size bottle of Fabreeze to keep in my purse. This way I will not be caught like that again. I just spray it into the bowl a few times as I'm going. it seemed to do an alright job - at least it helped.

Only immature drunks think that a bathroom isn't for pooping.

I know there are no glamorous diseases, but Crohns can be soooo gross at times. The people who know you and love you don't care, the rest don't matter.

((((HUGS)))) Like everyone else said - they were drunk so - who gives a rat's patoot about them. That being said... people can be horribly cruel. You were in a BATHROOM for heaven's sakes! What do people think happens in there??? Not everyone is there to powder their noses. This was humiliating to you, but with some distance from it and a little perspective you will recover. Maybe next time (let's hope there isn't one) you will even have the nerve to let one rip right out loud!!! :) The truth is - you DID make it to the bathroom and that is a MIRACLE! My most humiliating experience happened when I didn't make it and I messed myself. It was horrible. I really feel for you, but you survived it. Hugs from all of us and don't sweat the drunk girls. They won't remember any of it and you should put it out of your head too.

oh we've allll been there!! 

I once had to run into a bank on a busy street while shopping and barely made it in time to the bathroom.  Then a little kid and her mom came in and the small child went ON AND ON about the "smell in the potty".  I was soo embarrassed!

Then at work one day, (I work in a spa), I went to the private bathroom and felt some what comfortable being able to have D in there without anyone hearing.  Then? I flushed and it just kept rising instead of going down!!!  I tried to plunge it, but after like 20 minutes of plunging, it still wouldn't go down, so I had to tell my boss, who then called someone to take care of it. We've had problems with that toilet clogging for years.  It was my nightmare!!!

That is so awful! It's their loss for being so immature in their life and missing out on the good stuff. They are not worth the stress. But I know it sucks. I know it is the worst when it happens and like everyone is saying here-YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

When I'm "bad" and go for a run, I bring a ziplock bag with toilet paper in it now because a couple of times I had to stop and find the most secluded spot I could to squat by a tree. Not D (thanks goodness!!) but an uncontrollable BM. I run with my dog in a path that is somewhat wooded--but right on a main street. I was really lucky that no one ran by while I was squatting!

Stay strong - we are with you! I know it is the REAL stuff that reminds you that you have the disease and it's hard. It brought me to tears too but I just go through the process.. it's all a part of the process.

Nope, it's not ok. It's never ok.

Cruel as it sounds, all we can cope is that one day life (or karma, or consequences) will catch up with them and they'll learn, first-hand, how soul-destroying it can be to be mocked like that.

It's horrible, I know, but we CAN'T let this sort of treatment defeat us. The alternative is to stay at home and never go out, and that would be terrible and incredibly unhealthy.

Terrible when brave first steps backfire, isn't it?

But if this was your first time out, maybe you did too much? What about a little walk to the end of the street, instead, or a quick visit to an art gallery or something like that, so you know you don't have to stay out too long, and that a toilet will be nearby (either in your house or the gallery).

An evening concert is big and, I'm guessing, a few hours long?

I feel your pain! I have always disliked using public restrooms, waaay before I ever even knew what crohn's disease was. I do just about anything to make it to my bathroom for my business or use a private bathroom. about a month after my surgery, I went to my niece's bridal shower. The bathroom was not private at all. I'm sitting on the toilet, flushing and using Just a Drop like crazy. A little girl said something about it smelling in there. The mom, bless her heart, said "That's what bathroom are for." And you know what? She's right. But still, I hate using public restrooms!
