* afternoon tea with friend (I'd say but i have a horrible feeling she's about to tell me that she and hubby are moving out of town. We "need to have a chat", apparently )

I had my psychiatrist appointment today. And it went far better than I was hoping for, yay \o/ :p

I liked the woman almost immediately. She was lovely. She told me that my GP had put in a detailed referral, which was nice of my GP - I appreciated that. It made me feel like he had actually gone to a bit of trouble. At any rate, we talked for about an hour. She did have an assessment form, but the nice thing was she didn't follow it to the letter; so it didn't feel like the usual grilling these things are. I talked about personal issues (there's no end to those :-/), but equally it was about practical stuff and what could be done next. By the end of the session we had a list of about 5-6 different steps. One or two I'm dubious about, such as the self-confidence course (but she just about managed to sell me on the idea), but most of them I was keen on. I'm getting a referral to a consultant psychiatrist consultant to talk about meds and another issue, which I didn't want to take any further today. She encouraged me to look for a place of my own and recommended applying for DLA (Disability Living Allowance). She recommended voluntary work, and gave me a URL for a local organisation which I actually hadn't known about. Also suggested I get in touch with the Citizens Advice Bureau as well.

Phew. *collapses* I think that's the bulk of it. We didn't talk about my Crohn's much, but when we did she was quite sensitive to it - pretty much a first in itself, GP excepted.

I actually was expecting literally nothing from today, so I'm very happy it turned out the way it did. Have had nothing but indifferent or bad service in the past; back in Harrow it was appalling. It's just luck of the draw, really, what calibre of help you get. I think in the past nobody took me particularly seriously, whereas now it's a bit more obvious I have a few screws missing - not that they would put it like that, but I would <_<.

PS: The driving went about as well as I expected ie I took the wrong turning several times. Dear god I could get lost on a straight road <_<. But on the plus side I handled everything else well, including the endless roundabouts. It's been 6 months since I passed my test and, honestly, I now know what people mean when they say you don't learn to drive until after you pass your test.

NCOT, it sounds like the day was a success! I have a friend who can get lost in the city she grew up in, and it fascinates me. She's been driving well over 10 years in the same city, and gets lost. We bought her a GPS for her birthday a couple years ago :)

I've been pretty unproductive today. Maybe I'll cut some of the lawn while it's cooler out....but maybe not. I have a lot of shows taped, and might just be lazy and watch tv.

NCOT, I'm so, so glad your appointment was so positive and productive. You deserve to have someone who cares about you and listens to you!

I think working on self-esteem is a good idea. I can tell, from your emails and your posts here, that you honestly have no idea what an amazing person you are. I think it'd be lovely for you if you could find out, for yourself .

NCOT, I don't laugh at you, but I'm baffled at how someone with so much history in a particular area can know so little about it. You're new at driving, so it's understandable. She, however, has been driving 10+ years in the same city, and gets lost in it. I cannot wrap my mind around it.

@Ivy - No, no we're not =/ Plus I didn't exactly grow up with a multitude of nice and lovely things said about me :-/

But thank you. Sincerely. I'm actually not that good at complimenting others, as well as myself, but I do think you yourself are a special person. I think you're a very kind person and that counts for a lot with me.

@Becky - She sounds like my mum's friend, tbh <_<. Actually I do eventually learn places, but it takes a long time. I'm not the sort to do a route once and then remember it; usually have to do it several times before it becomes properly engrained into memory.

That's pretty normal..having to take a route a few times before learning it. I don't remember specific routes unless I take them a few times either. I've lived in Atlanta for so long though, that most places are somewhat familiar. I use GPS all the time though, and I do get anxious going somewhere I've never been, even knowing "Carmen" (my GPS is named, yes!) is guiding me!
