i dont know my boyfriend says I am making too much out of the scope I will be having this week since his ex roomate had one done post colon cancer and then 2 hrs later went to work.  He informs me we have things to do in town after my test since it is 30 miles from home.  I dont think he understands the biopsies how sick the anesthesesia.  he says I act like i am going into open heart surgery...just frustrating...

I have in the past puked my guts out post scope etc been to the point where i am near passing out and still after I eat have the runs badly

I think your boyfriend doesn't understand. Basing his expectations on a sample of *1* is clearly not appropriate.

You have been through this before and know how it affects you. It's unfortunate that he is pressuring you this way. Would he be open to hearing that you feel frustrated by his lack of understanding? That he doesn't seem to accept that your personal experience with this procedure is what is important - not his ex-roomates?

about the nausea/vomiting. You may want to ask your doc or the anesthesiologist about whether you could use a scopalomine patch to help reduce the chances of this happening. This is what they did for my son on his last surgery and it made a pretty big difference. It stays on for 3 days so it helps way past the immediate recovery period.

I would tell him HE is welcome to go and do the things he needs to do once you have safely woken up from the anesthetic. YOU will be resting quietly at the hospital with a good book, or in a nearby coffee shop if you feel up to it. I have had a few colonoscopies, and at no time would I have wanted to run errands afterwards. They even tell you that your decision making for the rest of the day will likely be affected until the anesthetic wears off. Tell your boyfriend that you might go credit card crazy if he makes you go with him!!

dragonfly: in my book you hold the trump card: "the doctor said" which is . . .go home, do not drive, work or otherwise engage in meaningful behavior besides rest!

Sometimes I feel perfectly fine about 20 mins after a scope, other times I go home and sleep for the rest of the day.  Either way he shouldn't be telling YOU what you are going to be doing after your scope.

Perhaps your boyfriend should do the prep right along side you, and then he can decide how he feels about running errands the next day. OK, not a great idea! Sorry!

The last time I had a scope I became too dehydrated and had to go to the hospital an hour earlier for IV fluids. Then the anesthesia made me nauseated and I had to stay in the recovery room for like 2 hours. So, yeah, he can go run his errands while you rest quietly.

You should go home and relax after the colonoscopy. The meds really mess me up, although I don't get nausea. You need to do what you need to do for your health. It's not about "toughing it out" and pushing yourself into more medication problems. It's about being realistic and giving yourself a break every once in a while because you deserve it!

he did later mention running the errands while I am having the test (he is a disabled war vet so it is hard for us to get around and the vehicle we have gets 9 mi per gallon so going 30 miles is quite costly both of us being disabled and all. I think I have like $1 to my name in my personal bank acct til october when I get my SSI check again bills then had to but the prep stuff was costly ugh cant seem to win had to cancel my dental appt for 3 fillings since I couldnt afford it I think things are just stressful

that sounds like a good solution - he can go out while you're being scoped -
take care of yourself, I would be in no condition to run errands after a scope!! Right home to the couch for me...

I have to agree with everyone else you need to immediately go home after a scope, in fact sometimes they have threaten to hospitalize me because I am so sick post scope. This is an incredibly individual disease, and comparing scopes with even other crohnies is not really the best thing to do.

If that doesn't work you could always say that why don't we have the doctor ram the scope up your six while we are there.

I would check with the facility before you tell him to run errands while you are having the scope.  The place my dr uses requires that your family member be in the waiting room the entire time you are there, so they don't allow them to go run errands.

It is such an individual thing...but me, I'm knocked down for about 2-3 days post scope(the pain, getting the GI system to SLOW down)...the last time, I just kept bleeding for about 2 days...Much of my disease is in my colon and rectum, so that could explain it(could also be the amount of biopsies they tend to take too)...but most people I've known, are knocked out when having to do this, even without the biopsies...take care...

I said the same as ZenaWP - make sure that he stays until you are in the recovery room and awake... THEN he can go run his errands.

I have to admit, I think it is darn rude for him to do this. I am a disabled vet as well, and this is a no fly zone.  What part of buddy team does he not understand?

There's an awful lot of difference between having a scope done, sick, and having done when a person is reasonably healthy.

You're perfectly justified in having some down time after your colonoscopy and no, you're not making too much of it. Anybody who thinks that shoving a scope over tender intestines and perhaps also bleeding ulcers is a minor procedure is sorely mistaken.

Lol I have no one else here where I moved and all went ok his son had a scope back when he was an infant. Sadly when my bf is in lots of pain due to the bone spurs in his back in addition to the copd, and diabetes he gets kind of grumpy. He was wonderful today took great care of me, went out got me more prep stuff after I vomited up the miralax.

hey maybe chat to ur doctor about prescribing some ondansatron wafers, they just disolve on your tounge so you dont have to try to keep them down it helps with nausia after anesthetics alot!
