Quick question, my daughter is having an issue since moving back to her apartment for college. I'm sure her eating habits are not the best, but I think she would benefit from a stool softener, but since I have the opposite issue I have no idea what type or brand to advise her to get. Any suggestions from the experts please?

When I needed one I used Colace. It's an OTC. When my constipation was very severe my doctor prescrined Miralax.

I also use to use colace until it got to the point where I was scripted miralax back in my pre op days

I have Crohn's disease and a chronic constipation issue- yeah, paradox. I have pain issues that my doctor attributes to the constipation. I use Miralax although it gives me gas, and I'm still working on getting the dosage just right. The doctor has me on a script for Miralax (poly-ethylene-glycol) which cuts the cost in half of the OTC price. My doctor says Miralax is much safer than stimulant laxatives too.

Really any generic will work just as well. Just look at the box and it should say something like same ingredients as in "Colace". Careful though, there is a Colace laxative too. So read your labels carefully. Good luck!

Thank you all. On top of the issue going on with my husband, I really didn't need this too. This is the daughter who has always had tummy issues and its really coming to a head now. She is calling the doctor today to get an appointment for Monday so hopefully they will run some simple blood work and make sure that its just a case of not eating "proper" meals. Unfortunately, its not even close to the first time she's been checked for issues. sad
