Another colonoscopy?!?!

So I talked to my doc about the increased pain and sleepless nights, and he wants to do another c-scope. ARGH! I just had one in Ausgust! Granted, the University of Chicago did it and not him, so I kind of understand that he wants a look for himself...But before the August one, I had just had one in April. I'm scheduled for next week.

I don't want to but I understand why he feels like he need to. He wants to make sure disease hasn't started in my colon again (in August I had active disease in my ileum and biopsies that indicated inactive disease in my colon).

Last time, they gave me fentanyl and benadryl and I was awake the whole time and it was horrible, I kept asking when she was going to be done and that it hurt and telling her I wasn't asleep, but she just patted my back and said "soon". I don't want another disaster like that. I'm thinking about asking if I can be all the way out. My other 2 c-scopes (May 2009 and April 2010) were fine, it was the demerol/versed combo but versed barely works anymore since I've had it 5 times within the last year (2 c-scopes 3 endoscopies).

That's awful you were awake in pain...I think they gave me Benodryl, which made me almost fall asleep, then (i think) Valium which immediately knocked me out for the entire procedure. I'm sorry you have had so many in such a short period. I bet you prep like a champ though.

The GI docs here in my town only use propofol for scopes.  I never wake up during the procedure, and when done there is no groggy feeling.  It has made the scopes so much easier to tolerate, now if they could just find a better way to do the pre scope clean-out!!!  Ha Ha.

That's no fun. My GI's NP wanted me to have another scope, but I told her no. I said I know I am flairing and you don't need to scope me for it. My last two scopes I was perfectly awake and asked questions.

It does seem a bit soon for another colonoscopy. Ask your doctor what he would do if he found disease in your colon; if it's prescribing more medication he could do that without putting you through another colonoscopy. Most of the time doctors have to prescribe without being certain what's going on inside, since colonoscopies are too inconvenient to perform very often.

I had one in Jan where I woke up and it was awful. Afterwards my Dr said we put a note in my file to request propofol from now on (beforehand). I just had another scope monday and they used it and it was far far better. It was a different Dr at at a different hospital though, but the same medical systems. Different hospitals have different typical procedures but will often honor your specific requests for situations like this. Talk to your Dr. For this scope they actually also gave me fentanyl afterwards in recovery to ease the post cramping. It was awful back in Jan when that was the only thing they gave me the entire time!

I'll try asking about the propofol. My doctor's nurse can be a...not so nice lady...so hopefully she doesn't shoot me down right away. I guess I'll have to play her sympathetic side and see if that works. I think they thought the benadryl would put me out, but I've NEVER reacted like that to benadryl, it's just a side-effect that I don't get...unfortunately in that case.
I want to say no to the scope, but I guess I'm afraid to. I want to tell him to just treat me already!

I had a pill cam scheduled for Tuesday, but he canceled it because he said he would rather do a colonoscopy. UGHHHH! My problem is most likely my small intestine! My D is bright green and black (like, it looks like all I've been eating is olives and grass)...And we know I have active disease in my duodenum and terminal ileum from the last c-scope and endoscopy.

I'm so frustrated, and so tired. I guess if it takes another colonoscopy for him to treat this monster, that's what I'll do...I actually really like the guy. He has an excellent bedside manner.

That is just awful!  I have had four this year and each time my lovely GI asks 'now how much sedation do you like' and I grin and say I don't want to remember a thing and now I never do - I had a scope once with no pain relief - no one should ever have to suffer that and I changed my GI soon afterwards!

Since I was diagnosed and when the diagnosis process started, I have been scoped over 30 times. On my last scope preconsultation, my new G.I. looked at my medical records and remarked that I have done this so many times that I could probably do it myself. I never thought that possible until I started reading here about some being awake during their scope and even asking questions. OUCH!!!! If my G.I. made me stay awake during a scope he had better buy me dinner afterwards and send a great Christmas card. I don't think I would make it. I woke up once and the feeling of being a human kabob was enough to make me panic until they put me back out.

I personally think you would be better off with the pill cam. Its sees areas that the scope can't reach.

I agree with Nanners the pill cam will see all of the small intestine, whereas the scope usually only sees a very small portion if any of the small int. Pill cam was what finally found my stricture in the term. ileum because the scope just did not go that far.

I'll have to ask about the pill cam. My doctor hasn't even mentioned it to me as an option.

Ouch! I have two friends who woke up during colonoscopies. They were both very thin. I've heard anesthesia stays longer in fat cells. The last two scopes I had, I was out and don't remember a thing. The first one I had, I vaguely remember seeing the monitor once very briefly. I think it was when they were finishing up. That doctor said I'd need full sedation next time.
I have not been doing well and think another scope might be in my near future. It's like when they can't get us well, we suffer again!
