I started SCD about
7 months ago. I eat phase 2 with some phase 3 veg added in but no nuts or beans yet.
I was 205 and am now 163. I was at 172 ish for about
6 weeks but have dropped almost 10 pounds in the last month.
Is this normal? My doc told me to eat more cause I looked bad. I am in a light to medium flare right now.
Thoughts?

It could be a matter of you not absorbing nutrients if you are in a flare and still inflamed. How tall are you? I'm 6'3" 172 right now. But I've put on close to 20 pounds since I started the SCD in July 2009. I was pretty strict about
it for the first 10 months, but now I probably get about
98 percent of my calories from SCD legal foods. I think the things that helped me the most were/are the nut butter brownies from BTVC, of which I go thru a batch every two days, and yogurt made from half and half, to which I add olive oil and honey. I figure that's 2000 calories or thereabout
s. On top of that I eat lots of other stuff. I seem to have plateaued and would like to pack on another 10 pounds, so I'm trying to have a smoothie every day now. My BMI is a healthy 21.7 or so, which is exactly in the mid range for a man of my height. That's why I ask about
your height. I'd say you're fine unless you're a bit taller than me.

I am 5'11 and I ammy BMI is in the normal range and if anything on the higher side of normal. That is why I am asking. I do not think I am too lite.
Thanks for the feedback

Dave, how do you feel the SCD is impacting your Crohn's? Are your symptoms on the wane? I started when I was already in remission, so I can't say for sure how I've been affected. I can't deny the weight gain though when no other diet was putting weight on for me.

HAN Shan - I think / hope that the SCD is helping. I keep waiting to get settled down on my meds but it seems like every three weeks to a month I make a major change. This week is a major reduction of the pentassa due to joint pain. I do not think I will really know the full effect of SCD until I am on consistent with the meds for at least a couple of months. However, I have never eaten so healthy; my blood work is coming back great so I will continue for sure. I somehow think I have to do everything I can to impact this DD and what I put in my mouth I can control, unlike how I feel. NE NE – SCD stands for Specific Carbohydrate Diet. The basic premise is to starve out bad bacteria in your guts and replace it the good stuff. SCD can be used to control weight or more common to gain weight. One example of this is yogurt. Homemade yogurt is a staple of the diet. As I want to lose a few pounds I make it with fat free organic milk. For others who want to gain weight they will use ½ and ½ to make the yogurt. I would not start this a weight loss program as it is pretty restrictive but rather only start it is you really feel it will help your guts. There are lots of great folks on this site if you want further information; all you have to do is ask Cheers David
