Hey all....

My son is 4 months and is only breastfed... I do not wish to wean him yet. However, my tummy is starting to bug and I am worried about the meds. I have been taking Pentasa for the last few days and am concerned about the affects on my son. I have to get in to see my gastro specialist but fear he is going to try to put me back in Imuran which means breastfeeding is done...

What experiences / drugs did you use while breastfeeding?

Any / all info will be helpful and appreciated!!!

I was taking Lialda while breastfeeding and was told Pentasa is safe to breastfeed with. Imuran is possible to breastfeed with, if I had wanted to I could have taken imuran at night and pumped during the night and throw away that milk as well as first morning milk. I chose not to because I didn't want to risk any imuran passing to my child. There are other moms on here who have breastfed while on imuran.

Hi Timnlay, congrats on your baby son !

Do not worry about Pentasa, I was on Pentasa and Entocort whole second pregnancy and I breastfed with Pentasa (2x2)for a year, I have a healthy 19-month-old baby girl.

Currently I am pregnant and taking Imuran and Pentasa and cinsidering breastfeeding with that althrough have not decided whether to do so, am concerned about the Imuran.

This link will take you to Dr. Thomas Hale's website. He's consider the leading expert in meds & mother's milk in the U.S. You can look up your meds here and see if they are safe. Pentasa is safe, but in high doses can cause diarrhea in baby. I have taken asacol (very similar to pentasa) while breastfeeding all 3 of my children and not one of them had any problems.

I'm on Pentasa and also have 4 month old. He was in the NICU and even there they were cool with Pentasa. I also rookie for 15 months of nursing my daughter.

I have the actual Hale page somewhere. It's not in your milk for about 6 hours if I recall, but it stays in for 8-12 I think. The dose Hale studied was 1g, we take more. The only side effect was loose stool, but big whoop in a bf baby. I try to take mine later in the day so maybe the highest amounts are when he's sleeping (in theory). An LC also suggested, only if nervous not necessary, having DH give a bottle of formula in the night so you won't be as worried about it then.

The only hypothetical risk is Rhyes (sp) syndrome, because it's related to aspirin, but I don't think it's ever happened. My super cautious GI has had several moms nurse on it and has seen no issues. My daughter is two and perfectly healthy and way ahead on verbal and other development.
