I was just curious if any of you knew whether or not it was safe to give blood. I am taking Cimzia and Apriso and was not sure if that would affect my blood or if it was even a good idea for people with CD to give blood.

I never have been able to, because of all the meds I take.

Has your hemoglobin and iron status been checked - these are usually low in people with Crohn's, which prevents them from being able to give blood.

No, I don't think that either of those have been checked.

I have given blood before. Crohn's did not affect whether or not I could give blood as long as my iron was high enough which they test when you go and depending what meds I was on at the time.

They will not take blood if you are on any meds (in Canada atleast) And Crohn's excluded me from donating...

Giving blood is regulated (at least in the US) more as a state by state level (I'm a lab nerd, who kept up with the different regulations regarding blood donation, esp as it deals with disease...cuz I worked at the state health agency)...in certain states, any person with any autoimmune disorder cannot give blood...and then there are the various regulations based on the medications you take...
and then if you're healthy enough...oh, and if you've had a tattoo...regulations based on travel, etc...
So just look online for your local blood bank and look to the regulations...they will usually state who can and cannot give blood...

Thanks everyone!!! I tried to give blood today and was told that because they couldn't fine Cimzia listed in their medication database and couldn't get a hold of a doctor (since it was Sunday) that they had to refuse me. It made me mad because I had waited for 2 hours. Oh well, hopefully I can get a note from my GI regarding the Cimzia and can donate next time around
