I started Azathioprine today. Saw my specialist today and he showed me some not so pretty pictures he took during my colonoscopy - red, inflamed, some areas with scarring. He said we really need to get the inflammation under control in order to help things in the long run. So, I just swallowed my first Azathioprine pill - a bit scared of the potential side effects - but I hope it helps. Feeling a bit depressed that I have to accept this DD and that I will have to take meds for a long, long time.
The good news is that I convocated today with my graduate degree - horray! Pictures of my colon in the morning, and a few hours later pictures of me in grad outfit - really I guess it is appropriate since I think it was grad school that made that colon look so darn bad - ha, ha! (and sigh).

Congratulations BB! What an accomplishment! Good luck with the Imuran. Made me sick as a dog after about 2 weeks, but sounds like many others have had success. Here's hoping it's the right drug for you!!

Congratulations BB on your graduation!! Good for you! We have many members on this very forum who have been successfully treated with Imuran and its sister med 6mp for as long as 10-11 years. Imuran can cause nausea, so do be sure to take it with food. Also the side effects usually improve after a few weeks. Imuran caused too much nausea for me personally, but I switched to 6mp and took it at night and I didn't have any further issues. It can cause some hair shedding, and taking extra folic acid will help that. Good luck and I hope the Imuran does the trick for you! Hugs!

Congrats on the degree! I have been on imuran for 13 years now- it allowed me to be in remission for 12 years and now I am on it with Humira. I did have some brief nausia but overall no side effects. It was and has been a miracle drug for me.

Azathioprine is powerful, so it has a really good chance of helping you!

I've been on AZT 50mg x 2 for about a year.  I was worried about the side effects but haven't experienced except scalp pimples and the Dr. says there is no connection and it's cheap at about $47/month.  I don't know that it's doing much good, at least from the description  of my last scope.  My Dr. said something about changing med at my next appt.  I was too impaired understand.

Congratulations!

Also, I was on Azathioprine for 4-5 years, i dont remember exactly when i started taking it. Never noticed any side-effects. It never put me into remission, but it was enough to keep me out of the ER. Very solid maintenance med.

Congrats!!!

I am currently taking Imuran.  I took it many years ago, but stopped.  I don't remember having any symptoms back then.  Now what I notice is dry mouth.  Drinking water or anything doesn't really relieve it, but if I continuously keep drinking through out the day, it doesn't get so bad.  Very tired too.  I don't know if all that is from the Imuran or not.  I am weaning off of predisone and just got done taking Flagyl- it sucks to take a drug and not sure if the symptoms you are experiencing are from that drug or something else.  Good Luck!
